To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JosEPH MAST, citizen of the State of Kansas, residing at Fort Riley, Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Im rovements in Sanitary Garbage-Tanks, 0 which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to the disposal of garbage and refuse, and particularly to means whereby such material may be handled with a view to increased sanitation.

The invention includes the features of construction and combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

In the accompanying drawings :-Figure 1 is a central vertical sectional view of a garbage tank or receptacle embodying my invention; and Fig. 2 is a front view of the same.

In these drawings, 1 indicates a portion of a porch or other framework to which the garbage receptacle 2 is attached by rods or bars 3 bolted to the porch or other support, and suitably attached at 1 to the receptacle. The receptacle has a hinged top 5 by opening which the refuse material may be placed in the receptacle, and upon the other side of the receptacle from that upon which the opening is left by lifting the cover, I arrange a discharge chute 6. This discharge chute is hinged at the lower outside edge of the receptacle at the point 7 and it has a bottom 8 and upwardly extending sides 9 of curved form adapted to fit either inside or outside of the main body of the receptacle. From the hinged point 7 the rigid body portion 10 of the receptacle slopes downwardly toward the front, and connects with a downwardly extending pipe 11 which connects with a trap 12 from which a pipe 13 leads to a suitable sewer connection.

Within this receptacle I arrange a deflector plate 1 1 pivoted at 15 to the front side of the receptacle, and adapted to reach substantially all the way across the same to the rear, with its free edge underlying a flange or shelf 16 attached to the inner face of the rear side of the receptacle, and projecting downwardly and inwardly. This flap or deflector is connected with a controlling chain 17 which is attached to the deflector at or near its free end, and passes up over a pulley 18 supported in the outer wall of the receptacle, from whence the chain or cord passes downwardly to within convenient reach of an attendant on the garbage wagon, the body of which is indicated generally at 19.

In the operation of the tank, I may employ a water spray at 20 carried by the cover 5 and supplied through a pipe 21, so that the contents of the receptacle may be subjected to a supply of water for washing the same, and this liquid, together with the liquid of the garbage, will pass directly to the sewer through the trap 12 in which there is maintained a liquid seal. When the garbage is introduced, the movable bottom or deflector 14 is in its uppermost position, indicated in full lines, and the chute 9 is swung so that its side or bottom 8 will close the opening in the outer wall of the receptacle, and thus the receptacle will be tightly closed against the emission of odor. Any liquid which may be contained in the garbage may pass down through openings 22 provided in the movable bottom or deflector 14, and thence into the trap 12 and by way of the pipe 13 to the sewer.

The receptacle is mounted in such a position as to enable the garbage collector to drive his wagon so that it may receive the contents of the receptacle directly upon the manipulation of the chute 6, and the deflector or movable bottom let, and having properly positioned the wagon, the chute 6 1s swung outwardly and downwardly into the position indicated in dotted lines, in which position it is arrested by a stop 23 thereon striking a stop 24 on the side of the receptacle. The attendant then, by releasing the chain or cord 17, allows the movable bottom or deflector 14: to fall into the position shown in dotted lines, when the contents of the receptacle will slide down this inclined bottom and along the inclined wall 8 of the chute directly into the wagon.

I claim as my invention:

1. A garbage receptacle having a discharge opening in its lower end, a chute for receiving the material from said opening, a plate for holding the material above said opening, and means for tilting said plate to deliver the material thereon to the chute.

2. A garbage receptacle having a discharge opening in its lower end, a plate for supporting the material above the opening, a movable chute closing said opening when in its raised position, and means for tilting the plate to discharge the material thereon through the opening onto the chute.

3. A garbage receptacle having a discharge opening in its lower end and a liquid discharge below said opening a perforated plate located above the opening for supporting the solid material a movable chute closing the opening when in its raised position, and means for tilting the plate to discharge the solid material through the opening onto the chute.

4c. In combination with agarbage receptacle having a discharge opening, a movable chute located adjacent the bottom of the receptacle and having a wall to close the discharge opening in the said receptacle, a perforated hinged bottom located above the plane of the chute adapted to be lowered to inclined position to deliver the contents to the chute, and a trapped liquid discharge for the receptacle below the hinged perforated bottom, substantially as described.
