VBNTILATOR.
APPLICATION FILED JAN. 3. 1910.

INVENTOR Z65 Jarrrzg ATTORNEYS LEO JOHANNS, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
VENTILATOBJ.
Specification of Letters Patent.
?atented May 19, 1910.
Application filed January 3, 1910. Serial No. 535,99
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Lno JOHANNS, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ventilators, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to ventilators, and the primary object of my invention is to provide a reversible ventilator that can be used at the lower part of a window frame or at the upper part thereof, with the body of the ventilator upon the outside of the window or upon the inside.
Another object of this invention is to provide an extensible ventilator that can be fitted in window frames of various widths.
A further object of this invention is to furnish a window frame with a ventilator that can be easily adjusted to exclude rain, snow or the forces of nature that would be detrimental to the contents or occupants of a compartment or room.
A still further object of this invention is to provide a ventilator that can be advantageously used in connection with windows and transoms of rooms or compartments containing sick persons, where it is necessary to obtain a thorough ventilation of the room without drafts or the admission of dirt or other matter to the rooms or compartments.
A still further object of this invention is to accomplish the above results by a ventilator that is simple in construction, durable, inexpensive to manufacture, easily handled, and highly efficient for ventilating purposes.
These and such other objects as may hereinafter appear are attained by the novel con struction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.
Reference will now be had to the drawing forming a part of this specification, wherein there is illustrated a preferred embodiment of the invention; but it is to be understood that the structural elements thereof can be varied or changed, as to the size, shape and manner of assemblage without departing from the spirit and scope of the appended claim.
In the drawing :Figure 1 is a front elevation of a ventilator constructed in accordance with this invention, Fig. 2 is a plan of the same, Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view of the ventilator, Fig. et is an end view of the same, and Fig. 5 is a vertical cross sectional view of the same.
In the accompanying drawing, the reference numeral 1 denotes a support formed preferably of a rectangular board or plate provided with a rectangular opening 2, and the inner side of said board or plate has the material thereof bordering upon the opening 2 cut away to provide a seat 3 for a reetangular frame 1, which is hinged at one end of the seat 8, as at 5. The frame 4: is provided with a netting or wire screen 6 to prevent dirt and other matter from passing through the opening 2.
The ends of the board or plate 1 are cut away, as at 7 to accommodate extensible members 8, these members being of a width corresponding to the cut away portions of the board or plate 1, and having the outer ends thereof provided with vertical ribs 9, the combined width of said members and ribs corresponding to the width of the board or plate 1. The inner face of the rib 9 is recessed, as at 10 to provide a finger grip and the outer face thereof is recessed or concave, as at 11 whereby said member can be easily fitted against the parting strip or stile of a window frame. The extensible members 8 are connected to the upper and lower edges of the board or plate 1 by channel shaped metallic strips 12 having the vertical flanges 13 thereof embedded in the members 8, while said flanges slide into longitudinal grooves 1st provided therefor in the upper and lower edges of the board or plate 1. The channel shaped metallic strips are furthermore secured to the members 8 by a suitable fastening means, as nails or screws 15 and are loosely connected to the board or plate 1 by nails or screws 16 mounted in the upper and lower edges of the board or plate 1 and extending through longitudinal slots 17 provided therefor in the strips 12.
The outer side of the board or plate 1 is provided with a semi-cylindrical hood 18 having closed ends 19. The closed ends 19 of the hood are flanged, as at 20 and suitably secured to the outer side of the board or plate 1. The lower side of the hood is cut away to provide an opening 21 approximately the length of the hood and approximately one-half the area thereof. The end walls 19 have the inner sides thereof provided with semi-circular guide ribs or flanges 22 and slidably mounted between said ribs or flanges and the curved portion of the hood 18' is a curved shutter 23 corresponding in curvature to the hood, whereby said shutter can be shifted to close the opening 21 or raised upon the inner side of the hood to clear said opening. The inner and outer sides of the shutter 23 at the lower edge thereof is provided with handles 24, whereby the shutter can be manipulated from the inner or outer side of the hood.
with the hood located upon the outer side of the window, the frame at can be opened and the shutter raised or lowered by the handles carried by the inner side of the shutter, and with the hood located upon the inner side of the window, the handles upon the outer side of the hood can be used for manipulating the same. The manipulation of the shutter of the hood therefore depends upon the location of the ventilator within a window or transom, but whatsoever the lo-v cation, the passage of air through the screen or frame 4 can be easily controlled.
It is through the medium of the extensible members 8 that I am enabled to adjust the ventilator to window frames of various widths, and as the sashes of the window frame can be easily moved, the ventilator, irrespective of the depth of the board or plate 1 can be easily clamped between the window frame and one of the rails of the upper and lower sashes thereof.
The board or plate 1 and the extensible members thereof are preferably made of wood, while the hood and shutter are made of metal, and both of these materials can be painted or otherwise treated to render the same non-corrosive and not susceptible to the action of the forces of nature.
Having now described my invention what I claim as new, is
A ventilator, comprising a board or plate, said board or plate having an opening formed therein, a hinged screen adapted to partially close said opening, extensible members movable relative to the ends of said board or plate, metallic strips carried by the upper and lower edges of said members and adapted to be loosely connected to the upper and lower edges of said board or plate, a metallic semi-cylindrical hood carried by one side of said board or plate, said hood having an opening formed therein, a curved shutter slidably mounted in said hood and adapted to close said opening, and means carried by the outer and inner sides of said shutter at the lower edges thereof to facilitate an adjustment of said shutter.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
