T. G: PEEPLES.
BACK BAND HOOKx APPLICATION FILED NOV. 2, 19095 957,3669 Patented May 10,1910.
'jy I a w vbneoaeo THOMAS GASTON IPEEPLES, OF GRENADA, MISSISSIPPI.
BACK-BAND HOOK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 1t), 1910.
Application filed November 2, 1909. Serial No. 525,876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS GASTON PnEPLns, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grenada, in the county of Grenada and State of Mississippi, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Back- Band Hooks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in back band hooks and has for its objects among others to provide an efficient yet simple and cheap form of back band hook provided with a roller and means serving as a guide for the reins, whereby wear on the reins is reduced to a minimum and the efficiency of the backhand hook thereby materially increased.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the numerals of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective View showing the application of the invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspective view showing the back band hook as applied to the band. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one portion of the hook, showing the rein guide and roller. Fig. 4 is an end elevation of the hook before its application to the band.
Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in the several views.
The improved back band hook and rein guide may be employed upon both the front and rear bands or portions of the harness, or upon either, as may be deemed most expedient.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the base piece of the back band hook, which is formed, intermediate its edges at the ends, with the upturned portions or ears 2, which are perforated for the reception of the pintles or lugs on the movable member. At one side, this base piece has the central extension 3 which is bent upon itself to form the hook portion 4. This base piece may be as ornamental in appearance as may be desired, and, upon opposite sides of its center, it is formed with the transverse loops or the like 5 and 6, through the openings in which the band 7 is designed to pass.
8 is the movable member of the back band.
It is formed with lugs or extensions 9 at the ends, which are receivable in the openings of the lugs or ears 2, as shown, and upon which the member 8 is adapted to be turned, when desired. The portion 8 is formed at one edge with the downwardly ext-ended portion 10 which is toothed or serrated, as shown at 11, and designed to engage the band to hold the same firmly in its adjusted position. At the opposite edge, the member 8 is formed with a centrally disposed downwardly extended flange 12 parallel with the serrated member 10 and, when the back band hook is closed, this member 12 is designed to be disposed at the inner end of the hook 4 of the base plate 1 and to close the opening into the hook.
Mounted upon the member '8, over the central tongue portion 13 thereof, is a rectangular member 14, the base portion of which rests upon the member 13 and the ends of which are secured to the portion 8, as seen at 15, in any suitable manner. lVithin the space inclosed by the rectangular member 14 is a roller 16 mounted on a suitable shaft or the like 17, supported in the top and bottom parallel portions of said rectangular member. The front vertical member 18 of this rectangular portion extends beyond the downwardly extending flange 12 and when the device is closed rests upon the end of the spring hook 4.
The operation and mode of use will be apparent. The device is secured to the band 7, which is secured in the ordinary way, and, if desired, another one is attached to the rear band 19, as shown in Fig. 1. The reins 20 pass through the rectangular space in the rectangular member 14 and engage upon the opposite sides of the roller 16, by which they are guided and the wear on which is prevented by reason of the presence of the roller, which is mounted to revolve easily and freely upon its shank. When the parts are in their closed position, the serrated member 10 firmly grips the band and prevents movement thereof while the extended end of the rectangular member, bearing upon the end of the spring hook, serves to keep the same closed to hold the flange 12 against the body plate 1, and to prevent any accidental disengagement of the parts.
It is deemed important that the rectangular member 14 mounted above the tongue have its ends secured in the body portion of the movable member 8, whereby it is held rigidly upon the central tongue portion 13, and that the front vertical member of said rectangular portion extend beyond the downwardly extending flange 12 of the member 8 so as to engage the free end of the hook 4, as clearly indicated in Fig. 4:, as this guards against any possibility of accidental displacement of the parts and holds the flange 12 down in contact with the body plate 1.
hat is claimed as new is As an improved article of manufacture, the back band hook herein described, the same comprising a base piece formed intermediate its sides at the ends with upturned perforated ears and at one side with a central extension bent upon itself toward said ears to form a hook, said base piece being formed upon opposite sides of its center with transverse loops and a movable member formed at one edge with a downwardly extended serrated portion and at its opposite edge with a centrally disposed downwardly extended flange, with an integral central tongue portion connecting the body of the movable member and said flange, a rectangular member mounted upon said tongue with the ends thereof secured in the body portion of said movable member, and a roller mounted 011 a vertical shaft within the space inclosed by said rectangular member, the front vertical member of the rectangular portion extending beyond the downwardly extended flange to engage the free end of said hook.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
