WINFIELD J'. BOTTS, OF HAVRE DE GRACE, MARYLAND.
FIGURED TOY.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 19, 1910.
Application iled December 16, 1909. Serial No. 533,354.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, WINFIELD J. Bo'rTs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Havre de Grace, in the county of Harford and State ofMaryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Figured Toys; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in mechanically operated toys and comprises a simple and efficient device of this nature, having various details of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claims.
I illustrate my invention in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure l is a perspective View of my toy. Fig. 2 is a sectional view through one of the gures which is actuated by the motor. Fig. 3 is a detail view vertically through one of the figures. Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail perspective View of a part of the invention.
Reference now being had to the details of drawings by letter, A designates a stump having a base portion B in a recessed portion of which is positioned a spring motor C, having gear connection with a vertically disposed rod B passing through a centrally disposed aperture A in the stump A, and said rod has laterally extending arms E and E which move over the top of the stump and adjacent thereto, and said stump has laterally projecting ribs F upon the circumference thereof forming means for actuating the arms and legs of the figure, which will be presently described.
Each of the figures has a body portion I having pivotally mounted upon the rod I, legs J to the upper ends of each of which is fastened a rod I2, each having an eye in its free end, and K designates a shaft j ournaled in said eyes and one end of the rod extends through the `body and is adapted to be positioned in the path of said projections F. The head of each figure is designated by letter H, which head is mounted upon a rod N extending through an opening K formed in the shaft K and fastened at its lower end to the rod I. yFixed to the shaft K is a crank arm J to which a rod L is pivotally mounted, said rod L being also pivotally connected at its upper end to a crank O formed in the rod Q, which latter is mounted in suitable bearings in the body of the figure and has arms fastened to its ends. The body of each gure is fastened to an arm E or E and as these latter swing about the top of the stump they cause the figures to move about the circumference of the latter.
The operation of the toy is as follows When the spring motor is wound up, a rotary movement is imparted to the rod B which causes the arms E and E to swing about and describe circles about the top of the stump, the figures following one in advance of the other about the stump. As the projecting ends of the rods K come in contact with the ribs F upon the circumference of the stump, the legs will be tilted and through the connections between the legs and the head and t-he crank shaft to which the arms are fastened, the heads upon the figures will be given a back and forth swinging movement and the arms also will be caused to swing back and forth. As the figures follow each other about the stump, to one arm of the toy may be fastened a whip T and one arm of one toy is shown as carrying a pitchfork S over the shoulder of the toy.
What I claim to be new is l. A figure toy, comprising a stump having projections upon the circumference thereof, a vertically disposed rotatable shaft mounted in an opening in the stump having laterally projecting arms, gures mounted one upon each of said arms, movable legs and arms upon said shaft upon the toys, and means actuated by said projections for moving said arms, as set forth.
2. In combination with a stump having projections upon the circumference thereof, a vertically disposed rotatable shaft mounted in an opening in the stump and having laterally projecting arms, which swing over the top of the stump, figures fastened to said arms and provided with pivoted members, a rod projecting from each of the figures and positioned in the path of said projections and designed to move said members, as set forth.
3. In combination with a stump having projections upon its circumference, a vertically disposed rotatable shaft mounted in openings therein and provided With laterally projecting arms movable over the top of the stump, a figure fastened to each of said arms, a rod mounted in the lower portion ot the body part of each figure, legs pivotally mounted upon said rod, pins projecting from the upper end of each leg and terminating each in an eye, ya shaft journaled in said eyes and having one end projecting through the body of the ligure and disposed in the path of said projections, a crank shaft journaled in the upper portion of the body, arms fixed to the ends of said thereon and crank shaft, a cra-nk arm iiXed to said shaft which is journaled in said eyes, a link connecting said crank shaft and crank arm, a vertically disposed rod, a head mounted Which is journaled in said eye and secured at its lower end to the rod upon which the legs are mounted.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aliiX my 25 said vertically disposed rod 20 passing through an aperture in the shaft
