DIAPHRAGM.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed October 16, 1909.
Patented Apr. 5, 1910 Serial No. 522.934.
'1'0 (1 whom it may concern:
lle it known that l. (haunt VAun. a citizen of the United Hlales, residing in New berry, in the eounty of lryeoming and State of lenusylvania. have invented certain new and useful lmprorements in Diaphragms, of which the following is a specification.
'lhis invention relates to dianhragms for sound conveying inslrunients and is particularly applieahle to use in talking machines.
The object of the. invention is to provide a diaphragm which will transmit the human voice, inst ruinental music and other sounds without detracting from the tonal qualities pr adding any unpleasant sounds. The dia phragm will he made of suitably prepared and treated liher sheetmaterial. if a center )(lfil is employed this may be made of simiar malerlal. 'lhe fibrous sheet material diaphragm and post may be assembled and fastened together by a roatin r of some resilient waterproof material. lh practice the diaphragm may have applied to it a gasket ol vielllahle material to prevent the parts which will normally clamp the diaphragm in position interfering with the proper working of the diaphragm.
lo the drawings aeeonipanying and forming a part of this specification Figure 'l is a perspective view showing one side of my improved diaphragm. namely the lower or post carrying side. Fig.3 is a similar view ol' the other or upper side of the diaphragm, Fig. 2' is a l)l()\'(ll away enlarged central cross sectional view of the diaphragm and eenter )HSl. Fl". 4 is a central sectional view 0' a sound box illustrating the diepliragii and gasket in position; and Fig. 5 is perspective view of a form of gasket: which may be employed with the diaphragm.
The body portion 7 of the diaphragm will bemade fromsome suitable fibrous sheetmaterial, as for instance paper of the rewill quill-ed thickness and stability. The diaphragm, preferably after being cut to size we coated with'some resilient material 8, which will be incorporated to a certain xtzont with the fiber of which the diaphragm tornado, art ieula-rly at the surface. This is tl-lu'strat bg tlie'stippling in Fig. 3.
The dirt ragm of my present an rovemeat is a apt-ed for'use in all seen con- 1'. in uments, and is articularly useit in to rig machines. hen uged for a.
talking machine. a eenter post. will be pro vided for conneetirn the diaphragm witl the other parts of the mechanism In the present instance the center post 9 is illustrated as made of sheet material, preferably the same kind of sheet material as is the diaphragm. The post carries two prongs lU-l(l which pass through a suitable 0 JBII- ing in the center of the diaphragm ant are bent ever, see more partieularly i ig. 3. Aftor the center )oet prongs have been passed through the (iaphragm and bent over in the proper position for holding the center post in place the waterproof coating ma terial will be applied to the entire structure and properly treated and cured. The waterproofing material will not only serve its purpose as such; but will also secure the prongs and the center post in rigid relation to the diaphragm. The fibrous sheet, material and coating of resilient waterproof material together give a diaphragm which responds to or produees sound vibrations without adding any undersirahle tone quali ties thereto or detracting in any way from the. sounds which are transmitted. The center )osl being of the some material as is the iaphra m and treated in the same manner, and beih securely held in position assists the diaphragm in the performance of its work.
It will be noted in the drawings that the center post. 9 is of sheet material applied to a diaphragm of sheet material with its edge l'estin against the face of the diaphragm.
In ig.4 there has been illustrated a form of sound box carrying my improved diaphragm. The box is shown as made up of two members 11 and 12 clamping the diaphragm in position between them by means of the gasket 13, which gasket in practice will be of some yieldable material, as' for instance lead wire. Byhavi'ng a yieldable gasket the diaphragm may. bo st-cow clamped in position without "placing undue strain upon the diaphragm or permittin any -n1ovemcnt of the mphragm whici would interfere with the sound.
Havin described my invention I claim:
1. A diaphra composed of sheet fibrous material a can or post of similar material carried by one side of the diaphra m and having securing prongs entering t rou h the dmplua and bent over against t e other side t ereof aud a waterproof recite centrpost and securing these together, and
enl cuating upon said diaphragm, center a gnsketf of lead wire at the e ge of the post, and securing prongs and scuring these together, substantially as specified. diaphragm.
2. A diaphragm composed of sheet fibrous CLARK ZARR. 5 material, a center post of similarlmaterial Witnesses:
