Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. s, 1910.
Application filed August 27, .1909. Serial No. 514,968. i
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NUTTER R. LEE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Johnstown, in the county of Weld and State of Colorado, have invented new and useful Improvements in Molds, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to molds and particularly to one adapted for use in forming conduits which may be arranged in a system of irrigation, andan object of the invention is to provide novel means whereby each conduit will be formed with a gatereceiving seat. N
A still further object of my invention is to provide a mold which will consist of hingedly connected sections whereby the said sections can be conveniently removed from the molded article after the same has set to a sufficient degree of hardness.
The above mentioned and other objects are attained by the construction, combinations and arrangements of parts, as disclosed on the drawings, set forth in this specification, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings, forming a portion of this specification and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views: Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved mold. Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken through the mold. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section taken through the mold. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of one of the heads of the mold. Fig. 5 is a horizontal section taken on the line 55 of Fig. 2. Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view of the centering member.
My improved mold consists of a member 1 which is formed of a plurality of sections 2 and 3 which are hingedly connected to each other at one side as shown at 4 and at the other side each section is provided with a series of alining loop-forming members 5 which are adapted to receive a retaining pin or equivalent means 6 whereby the sections can be effectively held in their closed positions. The section 3 has formed therein a horizontally disposed slot 7 which is provided for a purpose to be hereinafter more fully described. A core is removably mounted within the sections 2 and 3 of the mold and comprises hollow tubular sections 8 and 9 which are adapted to aline with each other and to extend in their entirety throughout the entire length of the member 1. A centering member 10 is slidably mounted in the slot 7 formed in the section 3, and as shown, this member extends horizontally through the core and is disposed 6 immediatelybetween the sections 8 and 9 thereof. The member 10 supports a guideway forming member 11 which is preferably formed from a casting having a groove 12 formed therein which normally receives the centering member as clearly shown in Fig.
2 of the drawings. The member 10 is provided with a suitable handle 10. The guideway-forming. member 11 is formed with a vertical passage 13 inwhich the inner 7 end portionsiof the core-forming sections 8 and 9 are disposed. After the inner ends of the core-forming sections are properly positioned in. the passage 13 formed in the guideway-formingmember the inner ends of the 7 said core sections will abut against the faces of the centering member so as to more ,effectively support the same. .The centering member is provided with a passage 14 which is disposed immediately in line with passages 15 and 16 which are formed in heads 17 and 18 respectively. The head 18 is of solid construction and extends across the bottom of the member 1 and is provided with a flange 19 adapted to be frictionally engaged within a portion of the core section 9. The head 18 is also provided with an annular flange 20 which is adapted to surround the lower edge portions of the sections 2 and 3. The head 17 is provided with filling openings 21 and with a depending flange 22 which is adapted for frictional engagement with the upper extremities of the core section 8. The head 17 is also provided with a flange 23 which is adapted to surround the uppermost edge portions of the sections 2 and 3.
A head-retaining bolt 24 extends through the passages 14, 15 and 16 hereinbefore described and is adapted when the mold is set up to effectively hold the same against casual collapse.
In operationrof the mold, the respective parts forming the same are set up as hereinbefore described and the plastic substance is poured into the mold between the walls of the sections 2 and 3 and the walls of the core-forming sections 8 and 9. After the substance has set to a sufficient degree of hardness the bolt 24 is disengaged from the heads 17 and 18 and from the centering member 10, whereupon the said centering member can be conveniently removed, likewise the heads 17 and 18. After the removal of the heads 17 and 18 and the centering member 10, the sections 2 and 3 can be swung into their open positions and may be entirely disengaged from the conduit-forming section or pipe 25. lVhen the pipe 25 is formed as herein stated it will have embedded therein the guideway-forming member 11 which is adapted to receive therein any suitable sliding gate. It will of course be understood that after the pipe or conduitforming section has been molded, the coreforming sections 8 and 9 can be removed.
I claim 1. A mold of the class described comprising hingedly connected sections, a sectional core disposed within the sections and having its walls spaced from the walls of said sections, a guidewa-y supporting and centering memberextending into the hingedly connected sections and disposed between the sectional core-forming members, and removable heads engaged with the said hingedly connected sections.
2.. A mold of the class described comprising hingedly connected sections, removable heads engaged with said sections, alining core-forming sections disposed between the hingedly connected sections and having their walls spaced from the walls of said hingedly connected sections, and a horizontally disposed removable centering member disposed between the COl6.-f01111l11g sections.
A mold of the class described comprising hollow core-forming sections, hingedly connected sections surrounding the coreforming sections and having their walls spaced from the walls of the said coreforming sections, a guideway-forming member disposed between the core-forming sections, and a centering member for supporting the said guideway-forming member.
at. A mold of the class descr ibed comprising alining hollow core-forming sections, a hollow member surrounding the said coreforming sections, a guideway-lorniing member disposed between the core-forming sections, a centering member for the gnide\\'ayforming member, heads engaged with the core-forming sections and with the said hellow member respectively, and a clamping bolt removably engaged with the said heads.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
