CORSET.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HERBERT CHAnLns BAYER, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at 31 London Wall, London, E. 0., England, have invented new and useful Improvements in Corsets, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to corsets and has for its object to provide improved means for attaching the ordinary stocking suspenders to corsets which shall not exert an injurious strain on the corset.

According to this invention a protecting strip of material is attached along its center line to the front of the covering'of the busk of the corset and is extended below the corset in the form of two diverging right and left straps to which the stocking suspenders are attached in the usual manner. The strip extends along the whole length of the corset and its width is such that it forms a protecting cover for both parts of the husk. A suitable width is from one to one and a half inches. The protecting strip is conveniently attached to the covering of the bush by sewing and it is preferably stiffened with whalebone or other suitable stiffening material.

A corset embodying the improvements of this invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a front view of the corset, and Fig. 2 is a part horizontal cross-section through the front of the corset on the line AB of Fig. 1. Fig. 2 is drawn to a larger scale than Fig. 1.

In these figures, 1 and 2 indicate respective parts of the covered husk, the part 1 being provided with catches or eyes 3 adapted to engage studs on the part 2.

f is the protecting strip of suitable material. It extends from top to bottom of the front of the corset and is sewn along its longitudinal center line to near the outer edge of the busk part 1 so that it forms two right and left flaps extending respectively over the busk parts 1 and 2. In Fig. 2

these flaps are shown bent away from the busk parts for the sake of clearness of illustration. In an actual corset they would lie quite flat against the busk. The left hand flap of the protecting strip covers the husk fastenings and thus prevents these chafing the bodice of the dress of the wearer.

At or about the bottom of the front of the corset (just above in the illustration), the protecting strip 4 is continued downward in the form of two straps 5 diverging right and left. To these straps the stocking suspenders 6 are attached in the usual manner. The edges of the protecting strip are preferably stiffened with strips 7 of stiffening material as shown.

This invention has the following advantages. The strain of the stocking suspenders is removed from the material of the corset and transferred to the protecting strip and thence to the rigid busk in such a manner as to produce an erect form. The figure of the wearer is kept flat in front. The stocking suspenders are not sewn directly to the corset and therefore the latter will wear very much longer, whereas when the stocking suspenders are sewn directly to the corset in the usual manner, they are liable to tear away owing to the strain upon them, and thus wear out the corset.

What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 2- In a corset having a bush, the combination, with the busk, of a protecting strip attached down the front of the covering of the corset busk, and continued from a point near the bottom of the front of the corset in the form of right and left straps to which the usual stockingsuspenders are intended to be attached, as set forth.
