L. D. SAXTON.
SAFETY RAZOR.
APPLICATION FILED OUT. 23, 1908.
Patented Mar. 8, 1910.
m. ILWSVEANSEETON WITNESSES gwwvm f ATTORNEYS T l Ell LIONEL D. SAXTON, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
SAFETY-RAZOR.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LIONEL D. SAX'I'ON, a citizen of the United States, residing in the borough of Manhattan, city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safetylltazors, of which the following is a specification. A
My invention relates to safety razorsand my object is to provide a device of few and simple parts which will effectually perform the work for which it is intended. I My guard frame also is so constructed that the blade is very easily inserted therein with no risk of injury to the user and as the blade enters the guard frame it falls naturally into the correct location where it is firmly positioned by shoulders, leaving an unobstructed clear space between the cutting edge and the teeth of the guard frame. This clear space extends all the way through the guard frame and prevents the possibility of the hairs being caught between the cutting edge and the guard teeth which causes either what is known as pulling or a failure to cut off the hair. These and other details and objects of. my invention will be more fully described in the following specification, set forth in the claims and shown in the drawings where like reference characters are used 111 the various views to indicate the same 1 parts.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the razor with the parts disassembled. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view. Fig. 3 is a bottom view of the guard frame. Figs. 4. and 5 are cross sectional views of the guard frame looking toward either end.
10 is a handle which has at its upper end a socket 13 into which the bed plate 11 is fastened by a threaded stud 12. The bed plate 11 is curved longitudinally and carries at one end, lugs Id.
16 is the guard frame, curved longitudinally to cpnform to the bed late 11, and having for a to the rib 18. n each of its four sides are epending flanges and along either of its longer sides are the guard teeth 17. At one end are the openings 19 to receive the lugs 14 of the bed plate and at the other end the o enings-19' engage with the lugs 21 of the s iding lever 22. This sliding lever is held in place on the bed plate 11 by means of a screw 23 which passes throu h a slot 24 at the outer end of the lever, t e

inner end of which has a slot 25 through which the stud 12 passes.
26 is a lug attached to the sliding, lever for convenience of manipulation and at the point. where thescrew 23 enters the plate 11 is a boss 30 with an inclined lower face, one end of which 31 acts as a fulcrum for the sliding lever, clamping the blade between the bed plate and the guard frame.
At each inner corner of the guard frame is'a shoulder 27, (as shown in Figs. 3, 4 and 5) which acts as a guide to properly position the blade 15 and hold its cutting edges the correct distance from the guard teeth to insure the proper contact with the face and heard, and also secure the clear spaces 28, 28 between the cutting edge and the guard teeth, referred to above. I
In assembling the parts of the razor the blade 15 is placed in the guard frame 16 and the sliding lever 22 is withdrawn to insert the bed plate 11 within the guard frame, the lugs 14 being inserted in the openings 19. The sliding lever 22 is moved over causing the lugs 21 to enter the openings 19' and the blade is then between the bed plate 11 and the rib 18 of the guardframe 16 in conformance with the.curve thereof. The cutting edges of the blade are a short distance from the guard teeth being held in that position by the shoulder 27,27. A turn or two of the handle 10, screws it down onto the stud 12, looking the slide against release and the razor is ready for use.
I do not desire to confine myself to the use of a double edged blade as it is obvious that one or two edged blades can be used in my device without departure from the spirit of my invention.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: a
1. lin a safety razor, the combination with a. bed plate curved longitudinally, and having lugs, of a blade adapted to be curved longitudlnally when locked in position, a
uard frame curved longitudinally and havmg an unobstructed opening between the cutting edge of the blade and the guard teeth, said opening extendin the entire length of the cutting edge of tie blade and entirely through the guard frame, slidin lugs coo crating with the lugs on the be plate to old the guard and late together and meansv for locking the sli mg lugs.
2. In a safety razor, the combination with a bed plate with lugs, of a blade, a guard frame enveloping the blade and having" lugs.
3. In a safety razor, the combination with a longitudinally curved bed plate with lugs at one end, of a slide with lugs at the other end, a blade, a longitudinally curved guard frame with openings at the sides to expose the cutting edges of the blade and holes at the ends for the lugs, and a handle'screwing on a stud of the bed plate and locking the slide.
4:. In a safety razor, the combination with a longitudinally curved bed plate with lugs at one end, of a slide fulcrumed at the other end and having lugs, a blade, a longitudinally curved guard frame with holes at its ends and openings to expose the cutting edges of the blade, teeth at the openings, a
threaded stud on the lower side of the bed plate passing through a perforation in the rear end of the slide and a handle screwing on the stud and locking the slide.
5. In a. razor, the combination with a guard frame with holes at the ends and longitudinal openings along its sides, of teeth at the o enings, inclined shoulders within the guar frame, a blade fitting within the guard frame and its inclined shoulders, a bed plate curved from end to end and having a boss at one end and lugs at the other, a sliding lever with a hole at one end and lugs at the other end attached to and fulcrumed on the boss, a threaded stud depending from the bed plate and projecting through the hole in the sliding lever, and a handle screwing on the stud and locking the slide when its lugs engage the holes in the guard frame.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this 22 day of October, 1908.
LIONEL D. SAXTON.
