'IMPRovEMEnT IN setmana-BINDER.
.` ThevvSchedulel-evfenied toxin these Letters Patent and'makingrprart of the same.
To all whom 4it A'may concern.'
Be it known that I, GEQRGE E. Monnet' Royalton, f
in the county of `.Waupacca,,an7d .State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful 'Improvements in Shingle-Binders; and I do hereby declare thatI the f following is Vavfull, lclear, and; exact description thereof,
reference being ,y had'to the accompanying drawings,
` making part ofthis specific-ation, .and to the letters of reference marked thereornalike letters indicating .like
parts wherever they occur.' l
i To enable others skilled in the art to construct and use my invention, I will proceed'to describe it.
My invention relates to shingle-binders; .and consi'sts `in the lnovel construction and arrangement of vcerta-iu mechanical devices in al machine for conveniently and rapidly binding shingles in bundles.
I n the drawings-. l i Figure l' is ,a longitudinal verticalsectien of my mal chine on thellinue x-xofig-Z, and
FigureA 2l isan end View, with a portion' `broken away. In constrlrlctilig my machine, I make a frame, A, of.
any desired size, and ont-of any suitable materiahvvith` an 'elevated back-piece, L, rigidly attached, and a corresponding front-piece, H, arranged, to slide on the rframe, and both providedwith narrow bottom and 4side-pieces) for supporting `the .thick ends of the 'shingies,` and-keeping theirsides even orsquare while.
being hunched, as clearly.shown inig. l.
Midway betweenthe front and back-pieces L and 1H, I insert in the sides of the-flame A, stakes, K,lto
Vkeep the sides of the small ends `of `the shingles even,
` `In standards M, rigidly connected to the front end of the 'frame A, I mpunt a shaft,G, and to it securely fasten arms, F, so as tol be near the middle ofthe end u of the ii'ame, and -to its, ends pivot hooks e and the hook h and nearthe front end ofthelatter lever, immediately yo ver the shaft G, I pivot a coupling-plate, E, provided with two or more h oles, ji, as clearlyshown in the same figure. u l
"To the levers B and-G, I attach crossipieces ,av and b, so as to be in line with `the. stakes K, and. to the outer end of the shaft GJ attach a handflever, D.
In operating my machine,`1 connect 'the 1hook e to' the frontend of the lever YB,.and then laya loweror under binder, c, on the cross-piece b, having iirst nailed to itmet'allic straps, J, as seen in ii g. 2.f I 4then ,adjust the sliding piece H, so as to give the desired length to the bundlerand arrange the requisite number of shingles inthe usual manner between Ythe pieces L and' H. I
lOver, the shingles thils arranged, I place an upper binder, d, in line with the under binder c.` This done, I connect the rear ends of the levers B and i0, bring c the cross-piece a down upon the binder d, and ypress ldown the front end of tbeleve'r B, and connect "the hook ftov one ofthe holes in the coupling-plate E,4
placing it in the highest one that can be reached 4by pressing down ou the lever.
Y. The levers B and (1,with the arms E andtheir hooks, andl the shingles, arertheln in 'the position nearly as .shown by the red lines in'iig.'1.- f I then press down on the hand-lever'D, and bring all the "parts into the position shown bythe dark lines, when the shingles are ready to be bound o'fastened together, and this I doV by carrying the metal strapsJ over the ends of the upper binder {1,and nailingithem fast.
. I no'w release the coupling ofthe lever G, first raising up the hand-lever Dior that purpose, take out the bundle of shingles, and proceed to bind another iu the same manner, and soon till allai-e bound.
It should be understood that the hooks e and fare.
curved or bent, als represented in iig. v1, so that when the lever D is turned down, their ends, pivoted to the arms F on shaft G, will be thrown a little past the centre, which will serve to lock the parts in position, so that the operator can leave the lever Dand nail the bands or straps J, one person thus ybinding and nailing the bands also. 1
I do not claim, broadly, the use'ot two levers operated by a rock-shaft, in the manner described, as such a mechanical-,device has before been used in other machines; but
Having thusdescribed my invention, Whatl claim, is-
A shingle-bindingmachine, consisting of the frame A, with the end-pieces L and H, the stakes K, and levers B G, provided with the cross-pieces a i), andl operated by the rock-shaft G, and curved hooks c j, all `constructed and arranged cooperate substantially as described.v f 1,
