Be it. known that I, Mine F. Bowsnn, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Renfrew, in the county of Butler and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rail-Fasteners for Metallic Ties, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the aecon'ipanying drawing.
This invention relates to rail fasteners, particularly designed for use in connection with metallic ties and the object thereof is to provide a fastener of such class in a manner as hereinafter set forth and claimed for se curely connecting a rail section to a tie to prevent lateral movement thereof, and at the same time allowing forthe necessary contraction and expansion of the rail.
Further objects of the invention are to provide a rail fastener which shall be simple in its construction and arrangement, strong, durable, efficient in itsnsc, readily set up .in operative position with respect ,to the base of a rail, and inexpensive to manufacture.
\Vith the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel con struction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more specifically de scribed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown the preferred embodiment of the invention, but it is to be -understood that changes, variations and ,said fasteners being modifications can be resorted to which come within the scope of the claims hereunto appended. 4

For connecting a track rail 1 to a metallic tie 2,- a plurality of fasteners are employed, disposedupon opposite sides of the base 3 of the track rail 1, overlap said base 3, and are detachably connected to the tie 2, the tie being provided with openings 4 for the passage of an element of the fastener.
A rail fastener in accordance with this invention comprises a headed bolt. The shank of the bolt is indicated by the reference character 4*, is square in contour, and the head of the bolt is indicated by the reference character The shank i of the bolt is adapted to extend through the openings 4, the latter being square to prevent turning of the shank i. The latter is formed with a vertixaltv-disposed slot 7. which-is rectangular in contour and through which extends a locking member 8 and a tapering key 9. The fastener further comprises a clamping plate (3 which is cutaway to provide a gripping surface (3 'whereby the said plate 6 can overlap the base 8 of the The cutrail, as clearly shown in Fig. 1. ting away of the clamping plate 6 provides a shoulder (3 which when the clamping plate 6 is in position, abuts against. the longitudi nal edge of the base 3 of the rail. The clamping plate'G is formed with a squared opening 6, through which extends the shank 4-. The opening 6" being squared and also the shank 4? being square, the plate 6 cannot rotate upon the shank or the latter rotate in theplate. The plate 6 is seated upon the top of the tie 2 and interposed between the head 5 and the tie as clearly shown in Fig. 1.
The locking member 8 has its lower edge formed with a seat 9 and a. pair of shoulders 10. The seat 9 of the locking member is adapted to be mounted upon the wall 11 of the slot 7 and owing to the length of the seat 9 the locking member 8 can not shift upon the wall 11 relative to the shank 41 The key 9 's of tapering contour and has its lower edge provided with a series oftransverse grooves or serrations 12 in which is adapted to en age a rounded lug 13 formed on the to edge of the locking member 8 at one en thereof. The upper face of the key 9 is fiat while its lower face tapers and the key 9 is adapted to be interposed between the locking member 8 and the lower face of the tie 2 and when said key 9 is driven home, the bolt is moved downwardly which securely maintains the clamping plate 6 in .position. ping. The clamping plate 6 is furthern'iore cut away to provide a gripping surface (3 so as to provide a shoulder 6 and by such an arrangement either end of the clamping plate 6 can be used to grip the base 3 of the track rail as is evident.
By setting up a rail fastener in a manner as herein referred to, the employment of nuts for maintaining the elements in position is dispensed with.
What I claim is:
1. A rail'fastener comprising a headed bolt adapted to extend through a tie, a clamping plate mounted upon the bolt and against the head thereof, said clamping plate adapted to engage the base of a track rail. with a verticallwdisposed slot. a locking member extending through said slot and supported by the lower wall thereof, said locking member provided with apair of shoulders for limiting .the shifting movement thereof in either direction, said locking member further having upon its top edge a lug, and a key extending through said slot and adapted to engage the tie for maintaining the clamping plate in position, said key formed with a series of transverse grooves, one of which is adapted to receive said lug to prevent shifting of the key when in its locking position.
2. A rail fastener comprising a bolt having a head and a square shank formed with clamping plate mounted upon said shank and abut-ting against said head, a locking member extending through said slot and provided with a lug, and a.

A rail fastener comprising a headed bolt having a square shank adapted to extend through a tie, a non-rotat able clamping plate mounted upon said bolt and against the head of the bolt and formed with a gripping surface adapted to engage the base of a track rail, said shank provided with a slot, a locking member carried by the bolt and extending throu 11 said slot, means extending through sald slot and engaging the tie and the locking member for securing the bolt in position, thereby maintaining the plate in engagement with the base of a track rail, and said locking member provided with a lug adapted to engage in said means to prevent the slipping of the latter when in ocking position.
