To all whom it may concern:
Be itknown that I, VVILLIAM S. KING, a citizen of the Unit-ed States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to boxes and relates particularly to boxes especially clesigned and adapted for containing merchandise and for exhibiting or displaying the same.
The object of the invention is to provide a box the cover of which is constructed and arranged to form a rest for the body portion of the box in which the goods are contained, on which said body portion of the box may be supported in inclined position so as to exhibit or display the goods contained therein to advantage, which will be simple, cheap and effective for its designed purpose.
u To this end a box of my invention comprises the various features, combinations of features and details of construction hereinafter described and claimed.

Fig. 2 is a plan view of the inside of the box cover; and Fig. 3 is a sectionalview on the line 33 of Fig. 2, showing the prop for the body of the box raised and the body of the box positioned therein.
Referring now to the drawing, A designates the body portion of the box and A the cover therefor having depending sides a,
the relation being such that, when the box cover A is inverted,- it will receive the bottom of the box A, all in a usual manner.
In order to better exhibit or display the goods or merchandise contained in the box A, a prop is provided within the cover A said prop being so constructed and arranged that it may be raised to form a support for one end of the box A, the opposite end of which rests against an end a of said cover A so as to hold said box from sliding ofi' from said prop. As shown, said prop, indicated as a whole by B, comprises sections 1 and 2 hinged or articulated to each other at 3, the outer end of one of said sections, as

shown the section 1, being preferably hinged B upwardly, when desired for use, means being also provided for securing the free end of said section 2 to provide for retaining the prop B in any desired raised position.
As shown, the means for so securing the free end of the section 2 of said prop B, consist of lateral projections 4t formed adjacent to the free end thereof, which are adapted to extend under the edges of strips 5 secured to the inside of the top of the box cover A said securing means, as staples 6, being applied at a distance from the inner edges of said strips, whereby the inner edges of said strips will be held firmly against the top of the box cover so that, when the lateral projections 4 on the section 2 of the prop B are inserted beneath said strips 5, said strips will exert a pressure on said projections which will operate to clamp said projections between said strips and the top of the box cover with sufficient force to maintain the same in position under the weight of the body portion A of the box and the contents thereof. Obviously, by applying the securing means, as the staples 6, at a greater or less distance from the inner edges of the strips 5, the pressure of said strips on the projections 4: may be increased or decreased.
A particular application of my invention is in comparatively small paste board boxes such as are commonly used for containing neck ties, stockings, and other furnishing goods. For use in this connection, I contemplate forming the prop B of paste board, the sections 1 and 2 of said prop, the lateral projections 4 on the section 2, and the strips 5, all being preferably formed from an in tegral piece or sheet of paste board, said piece or sheet of paste board being slit in proper manner to form the various elements of said prop, and being scored transversely to form desired flexible connections between the sections 1 and 2 of said prop B, between the section 1 of said prop and the body of said piece or sheet of paste board and be tween the section 2 of said prop and the sec tion at the front end thereof on which the lateral projections 4: are formed.
In order to hold the sides of said piece or sheet of paste board which form the strips 5,
in position, the ends thereof adjacent to the free end of the section 2 of the prop B are preferablyconnected by a piece 7, also preferably formed integral therewith.
In forming the lateral projections 4 on the sections 2 of the prop B, corresponding notches 8 are formed in the edges of the strips 5 which are adapted to receive said projections, so that, when in extended or inoperative position all parts of said prop will rest flat against the top of the box cover, in which position they will occupy the least possible space.
To provide for conveniently inserting the lateral projections 4 on the prop section 2 under the edges of the strips 5, the ends of the strips 5, connected by the strip 7 and containing the notches 8, are left free so that they may be sprung out away from the top of the box cover, an opening 9 being formed in the outer edge of the strip 7 for conveniently inserting a finger beneath the same for the purpose of so springing the ends of said strips 5 away from the top of the box cover.
lVith the described construction, when the lateral projections 4 at the outer end of the section 2 of the prop B are inserted beneath the edges of the strips 5, they will be clamped between said strips and the top of the box cover with a pressure suflicient 'to support the sections of the prop B in raised or upwardly bent position and to support the weight of the box A with its contents, the weight of said box and contents producing mainly a compression stress in the prop member 1 and only a very slight component tending to overcome the clamping action exerted on the lateral projections 4; by the strips 5. This component will, of course, vary with the elevation of the prop B, becoming zero when the prop member 1 is at right angles to the bottom of the box A resting thereon, and increasing as the inclination of said prop member 1 departs from the perpendicular. Thus, by raising the prop so that the member 1 thereof will extend approximately at right angles to the bottom of the box supported thereon, it is found that the clamping action exerted on the projections 1 is sufficient for all practical purposes.
I claim 1. A box comprising a body portion and a cover therefor adapted to form a rest for the body portion of said box, a prop in said box cover for supporting an end of the body portion of said box in raised position, said prop comprising sections articulated to each other, which, when in inoperative position, are disposed flat against the top of the box cover, and means for retaining the outer ends of said sections in positions corresponding to raised or flexed positions of said prop sections, said means comprising frictional means for so retaining the outer end of one of said prop sections in position.
2. A box comprising a body portion and a cover therefor adapted to form a rest for the body portion of said box, and a prop in said box cover for supporting an end of the body of said box in raised position, said prop comprising sections articulated to each other, the outer end of one of said sections being flexibly connected to the box cover and frictional means for retaining the outer end of the other of saidsections in positions corresponding to raised or flexed positions of said sections.
3. A box comprising a body portion and a cover therefor adapted to form a rest for the body portion of said box, and a prop in said box cover for supporting an end of the body of said box in raised position, said prop comprising sections articulated to each other, the outer end of one of said sections being flexibly connected to the box cover and frictional means for retaining the outer end of the other of said sections in positions corresponding to raised or flexed positions of said sections, said frictional retaining means comprising lateral projections on said section and strips secured to the box cover beneath which the lateral projections on said prop section are adapted to be inserted so as to be clamped between said strips and the box cover.
4. A box comprising a body portion and a cover therefor adapted to form a rest for the body portion of said box, and a prop in said box cover for supporting an end of the body of said box in raised position, said prop consisting of a plate secured to the inner side of the top of the box cover slit and scored to form articulated sections an outer end of one of which is flexibly attached to said plate'and the outer end of the other section of which is free, lateral projections on the free end of said second section and strips between which and the top of the box cover said lateral projections are adapted to be inserted and clamped so as to maintain said articulated sections in raised or flexed positions.
