Letters Patent No. 94,9613, dated September 21, 1869. L
rIMIPROVIIIMEN'JL IN FIELD-FENCE.
The Schedule ,referred to in these Letterg Patent and making pari: of the same.
lTo all whom it may concern;
'Be it knownvthat I, EDWIN KING, of Dunkirk, in thecounty of Ghanigauqlla and State of New York, have invented certain newand useful Improvements in Field-Fence; and l do hereby declare that the following is afull 4and complete description of the same, reference being had to thel accompanying.drawings, making' part of this'specitication, in which- -Figure 1 is a' side view ofthe fence and gate.
Figure 2, a ,view ofthe top.
Figures 3, 4 ,and 5, detached sections. t
Like Iletters of reference refer to like part-s in the different views.l i p This invention relates to the manner of securing the rails or boards of a fence to the'posts, said posts being made ofv metal and in two parts, and clamped to each other, with the bars between them, by means 'of' clips, hereinafter more fully described;
The posts of the fence above alluded to are' constructed in two sections, A B, iig.-1, a top view of 4which is shown in iig. 2. Each part consists of' a piece of bar-iron, of a proper length, bent double, so as to fqrm twoparallel standards, as shown in iig. 1, the lower ends of which are set in stone-worker wood, and stayed by the braces C. p
lhetwo'sections are set suiiiciently far apart to admit the endsof the bars D between them, which are then bolted together by the bolts a. 'Said bolts are'inserted in clips E, a detached View of which is shown in lig. 3.
Said clips .consist of a metallic plate, havingtwo of its opposite edges curved into a hook-like Iclaw, b, which, when in place, grips the 'edges of the posts, as shown in Iig l, in which it'will be se en that the ccntl'al parts of the clips serve as washers for the head of the bolt and nut thereof.
By this device, the two limbs of' each section of the post are coupled together in a rm and rigid manner, A
so that they cannot 4bend toward or away from each other, and at the same time the two sections are irmly clamped transversely together by the bolts, thereby holding in a very secure manner the bars, as shown in iig. 2.
Not only are the bars secured by being thus clamped, but in consequence ofthe bolts passing through them, they cannot become detached from the posts, thus adding further to its strength and permanency.
F is the gate, and is constructed inthe same way a panel ot' a fence, by means of clips, bent standards, &c., the bars being secured thereby in like manner by bolts.
Fig. 4 shows a modification of the clip E, above described, the two opposite sides of which, instead of being bent into a hook, are simply grooved out for the admission of the edges of the standard or posts.
Fig. 5 is also a modification of the clip, which simply consists of a plate, having its two opposite edges rabbeted ont, leaving a greater thickness in the cen- .tral part, thereby forming shoulders, for the support'of the edges of the post, which are arranged therein.'
That I claim as my improvement, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, ips- The posts-A B, clips E, in combination with the fence-bars b,sccnrcd by means of bolts, or their equivalent, as and for the purpose substantially as setforth.
' EDWIN KING.
XVitnesses J. l-i. Bulnunen, M. E. RUSSELL.
