Application filed. September 30, 1909.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADoLrH O. MUEHL- STEIN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toys, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to toys designed somewhat similar to the ordinary and well known type of toy commonly styled Jack in the box, wherein a spring or other means is employed for prOject-ing an object from the box when the lid thereof is opened.
The object of my invention is to provide a geographical toy adapted to be instructive as well as amusing to juveniles, and to attract considerable attention on the part of adults owing to its relation to a much discussed topic.
My invention aims to provide a box with a lid representing the arctic regions of the earth, and to arrange in the box a movable guided member adapted to occupy the position formerly occupied by the lid when said lid is opened. Upon the member is a representation of an arctic explorer in the act of finding the north pole and proclaiming the same for his country. The lid when in an open position is adapted to form a background for the explorer and when the box is opened, the toy presents an attractive and pleasing appearance.
The invention will be hereinafter described in detail and then claimed, and reference will now be had to the drawing forming a part of this specification, wherein there is illustrated a preferred embodiment of the invention; but it must be understood that the structural elements thereof can be varied or changed, as to the shape, size and manner of assemblage without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawing :Figure 1 is a plan of the toy, Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same in a closed position, Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the toy in an open position, and Fig. 4 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line X-X of Fig. 3.
To place my invention into practice, I provide the top plate 1 of a box like structure with a circular opening 2 adapted to be closed by a substantially semi spherical shaped lid 3, which is hinged to the top of the structure, as at 4: and provided opposite Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 15, 1910.
Serial No. 520,340.
the hinge with a hook 5 adapted to engage in a staple 6 carried by the top of the structure. The edges of the lid 3 are adapted to rest upon the top of the structure and said lid is designed to represent that portion of the earth bordering upon the north pole, the lines of longitude and latitude being shown together with certain land-marks.
In the box like structure are arranged four vertical and equally spaced guide rods 7 and slidably mounted upon said guide rods is a dome shaped member 8. This member corresponds in diameter to the opening 2 and is formed with a peripheral flange 9 provided with openings 10 to receive the guide rods 7. Centrally of the dome 8 is a vertical figure 11 adapted to represent an arctic explorer and the surface of the dome shaped member is finished similar to the outer surface of the lid 3.
The dome shaped member 8 has the under face thereof provided with a cavity 12 and interposed between said member and the bottom 13 of the box like structure is a coiled spring 14 adapted to elevate the member when the tension of said spring is released. The spring 14 is held under tension by two pivoted links 15 and 16 and a pivoted hook 17. The link 15 extends up wardly through a central opening 18 provided therefor in the bottom of the structure and is connected to the dome shaped member 8 by an eye-screw 19. The link 16 is of a sufficient length to extend from the link 15 to the edge of the box like. structure, where the hook 17 extends upwardly and engages in a staple 20 provided. therefor in the side wall 21 of the box like structure. By opening the lid 3 and releasing the hook 17, the spring '14 immediately raises the dome shaped member 8 into the opening 2, said member extending above the top of the structure and replacing the lid 3. When the member extends through the opening 2, the lid 3 is positioned at right angles with respect to the top 1 and constitutes abackground for the figure 11. In some instances the hook 17 can be released before the lid 3 is opened, whereby the figure 11 will be immediately projected above the structure when the lid is released.
Having now described my invention what I claim as new, is
1. A toy comprising a receptacle having the top thereof formed with an opening, a dome-shaped lid hinged at one side to the top of said receptacle and adapted to close said opening, said lid having means on its outer face to represent the arctic regions, vertical guide rods arranged within said receptacle, a hollow domeshaped member arranged within the receptacle and provided with a peripheral flange slidably mounted upon said rods, said dome-shaped member having its upper face provided with means to represent the arctic regions and adapted to extend through said opening, the flange of said member engaging the top of the receptacle whereby the outward movement of said member is arrested, a coil spring interposed between said member and the bottom of said receptacle and adapted when the member is released to project said member through the opening, and pivoted links having one end detachably connected to the exterior of said receptacle and the other end extending through the bottom of the receptacle and connected to said member for detachably securing it against the bottom of said receptacle and against the action of said spring.
2. A toy comprising a receptacle having the top thereof formed with an opening, a dome-shaped lid hinged at one side to the top of said receptacle and adapted to close said opening, said lid having means on its outer face to represent the arctic regions, vertical guide rods arranged within said. receptacle, a hollow dome-shaped member arranged within the receptacle and provided with a peripheral flange slidably mounted upon said rods, said dome-shaped member having its upper face provided with means to represent the arctic regions and adapted to extend through said opening, the flange of said member engaging the top of the receptacle whereby the outward movement of said member is arrested, a coil spring interposed between said member and the bottom of said receptacle and adapted when the member is released to project said member through the opening, pivoted links having one end detaohably connected to the exterior of said receptacle and the other end extending through the bottom of the receptacle and connected to said member for detachably securing it against the bottom of said receptacle and against the action of said spring, and a figure secured to the upper face of said member centrally thereof and provided with an emblem.
3. A toy comprising a receptacle having the top thereof formed with an opening, a dome-shaped lid hinged at one side to the top of said receptacle and adapted to close said opening, said lid having means on its outer face to represent the arctic regions, vertical guide rods arranged within said receptacle, a hollow dome-shaped member arranged within the receptacle and provided with a peripheral flange slidably mounted upon said rods, said dome-shaped member having its upper face provided with means to represent the arctic regions and adapted to extend through said opening, the flange of said member engaging the top of the receptacle whereby the outward movement of said member is arrested, a coil spring interposed between said member and the bottom of said receptacle and adapted when the member is released to project said member through the opening, pivoted links having one end detachably connected to the exterior of said receptacle and the other end extending through the bottom of the receptacle and connected to said member for detachably securing it against the bottom of said receptacle and against the action of said spring, a figure secured to the upper face of said member centrally thereof and provided with an emblem, said lid of a diameter less than the width and breadth of the top of the receptacle and of a greater diameter than the opening in the top of the receptacle, and means carried by the upper face of the top and by the lid for detachably maintaining the lid in a closed position.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
ADOLPH O. MUEHLSTEIN.
