DEVICE FOR FILLING PIPE-JOINTS.
I Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 8, 1910.
Application filed; August 11 1908. Serial No. 447,949.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRED J. HATCH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Racine, county of Racine, and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Devices for Filling Pipe- Joints, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in devices for filling pipe joints, with especial reference to devices for leading the joints of soil pipes.
The object of my invention is to provide a form of construction, which can be easily manipulated and quickly applied to and removed from the pipe joints and which, when in place, will be effective for the desired purpose of conducting the molten packing into position and preventing its escape until hardened.
In the following description, reference is had to the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of a pipe joint with my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view, drawn on line aJ-w of Fig. 1.
Like parts are identified by the same reference characters in both views.
A metallic segmental yoke A has its under surface curved in conformity to the surface of the pipe to which it is tobe applied, is provided with a runner cavity 1 in its upper surface, the base 2 of this cavity being inclined toward one side of the member and terminating in a comparatively thin edge 8, over which the molten filling is delivered into the space between the end 5 of the pipe, to which the yoke is applied and the over lapping annular end flange 4: of the next pipe.
Near each end of the yoke and on the same side thereof, on which the runner cavity 1 opens, the yoke is provided with recesses 6, which extend tangentially upwardly in the yoke from the surface of the soil pipe and are preferably curved outwardly in their upper portions, these recesses being adapted to receive a packing band, which preferably consists of a rope 7 of asbestos or other suitable material, adapted to serve as a temporary packing for the oint, pending the filling operation. This rope 7 is looped around the pipe and adjusted into the recesses 6 of the yoke. One end is then secured in one of the recesses by means of a set screw 9, whereupon by pulling upon the other end of the rope, it may be drawn tightly around the soil pipe and secured in the opposing recesses by means of the set screw 10. Each of the set screws 9 and 10 is preferably provided with a swiveled clamping plate 11, which engages the rope and clamps it securely against the inner wall of the recess. The rope, having been adjusted, the filling material is poured into the runner cavity 1 and is guided thereby into the joint, from which it is prevented from escaping by means of the rope. After the filling material has hardened, one end of the rope may be unclamped and the yoke and rope removed and re-applied at the next joint. The other end of the rope may be left permanently connected with the yoke until it is desired to substitute a new rope.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,
1. In a device of the described class, the combination of a segmentally curved yoke, provided with a runner cavity having integral side and bottom walls open at one side and adapted to discharge at one side of the yoke near its base, and means for clamping a flexible packing belt to the respective ends of the yoke.
2. In a device of the described class, the combination of a segmentally curved yoke, provided with arunner cavity having integral side and bottom walls open at one side and adapted to discharge at one side of the yoke near said base, and means for clamping a flexible packing belt to the respective ends of the yoke, said yoke being provided with open sided recesses adapted to receive the clamping belt and said clamping means comprising belt engaging plates and clamping set screws.
3. In a device of the described class, the combination of a yoke provided with a segmentally curved base and having a runner cavity adapted to deliver molten material at one side of the yoke near the central portion of said base, said yoke being provided with side recesses in its end portions opening on the side of runner cavity discharge, a clamping belt comprising a. suitable rope, and means for clamping a flexible packing belt in said recesses.
4:. In a device of the described class, the
combination of a yoke, having a segmentally curved base and provided with a runner cavity having a bottom Wall formed integrally With the yoke, said yoke being adapted to cover a portion of the upper surface of a pipe, :1 flexible packing band secured to one end of the yoke and means for detach- I Witnesses:
ing a piece of rope adapted to encircle the 10 pipe and connect the ends of the yoke.
In testimony whereof I affiX my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
