MANOIL GAGE, 0F BIG SANDY, TEXAS.
FENCE-POST.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MANOIL GAGE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Big Sandy, in the county of Upshur, State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fence-Posts; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to a. fence post and more particularly to the class of fence posts having means for locking runner wires thereto.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a fence post having a plurality of wire receiving slots and means for locking the wires within the slots and which means will permit the removal of the wires from the slots at will.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a fence post preferably formed of metal and having a concrete base or foundation, the said fence post having wire receiving slots at intervals throughout its longitudinal length in one edge thereof, and eccentrically mounted movable locking means arranged in proximity to each slot and adapted to secure the runner wires against displacement and also permit detachment of the wires from said slot when deemed desirable.
In the drawings accompanying and forming part of this specification is illustrated one form of embodiment of the invention which, to enable those skilled in the art to practice said invention, will be set forth at length in the following description, while the novelty of the invention will be included in the claim succeeding said description.
In the drawings :--Figure 1 is a side view in elevation of the fence post showing the runner Wires associated therewith. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the fence post. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the locking means disconnected from the fence post.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawings.
In the drawings, the numeral 5 designates the fence post which may be of any suitable material, however, preferably of metal and having at its lower end a base 6 of concrete which is embedded in the ground, and sup- Specification of Letters Patent.

ports the said post in a vertical position. Said fence post 5 has in one edge thereof throughout its longitudinal extent spaced entrance slots 7 horizontally disposed with respect to the longitudinal axis of said post and which slots terminate in curved recesses 8 which latter are intersected by V-shaped slots 9.
In close proximity to the entrance slots 7 are movable locking elements such as cam shaped members 10 which are eccentrically mounted by pivots 11 on the side of the fence post 5 and each has its peripheral edge serrated to form biting or ratchet teeth 12 for engagement with the runner wires 13 inserted in the entrance slots 7 whereby said runner wires are moved inwardly into the V- shaped slots 9 and locked within the latter. In the outer face of each member 10 is a squared recess 14 for receiving a tool (not shown) so that the said member can be moved to locked position. To connect the runner wires to the fence post the said runner wires are inserted in the entrance slots 7 and moved into the recesses 8 and then by lowering the wires for engagement with the Vshaped slots 9 and upon turning the member 10 the same will force the runner wires into wedging position in said slots 9 and thus be held in a locked position. Now, upon reverse movement of the cam shaped member 10 the wires 13 may be withdrawn and thereby shifted into the recesses 8 whereby said wires are free to be disengaged from the fence post.
Having described the invent-ion what is claimed is-- A fence post having entrance slots in one edge thereof and also V-shaped slots communicating with the first named slots, and pivotal cam-shaped members eccentrically mounted on the outer face of said post in proximity to the entrance slots and movable across the V-shaped slots, each member containing a squared socket to receive a tool to permit the member to be turned for wedging and looking a runner wire in the V- shaped slot.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signa ture, in presence of two witnesses.
