WELL-COVER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 8, 1910.
Application filed December 14, 1908. Serial No. 467,564.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, BARTON D. HUNTING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rockford, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Well-Covers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in well and cistern covers, and its objects are: First, to provide a well cover that may by means of properly applied supports, be readily applied to cover wells or cisterns of various diameters. Second, to provide a well cover with which the pump is supported independent of, and to one side of the main cover of the well, and, third, to provide a well cover with which the cover to the man hole portion of the crib that supports the cover is left perfectly free for the passage of a man to and from the well, with the pump permanently located, and with which the pump may, if desired, be removed without difiiculty by passing it sidewise from the pump opening to the manhole proper. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated by the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a plan of the casing that forms the man hole and the pump receptacle. Fig. 2 is a section of the same on the line at 00 of Fig. 1 showing its normal position over a well. Fig. 3 is a plan of the complete cover and easing with the pump in position. Fig. 4 is a section of the casing on the line y y of Fig. 1 showing means for supporting the upper portion of the casing independent of the lower plate, and, Fig. 5 is a plan of the same.

My invention consists of the upper casing B, constructed, preferably, of cast iron, and having a downwardly projecting flange D that forms a neck of some depth. The horizontal portion or rim B of this casing is designed to project outward, and when only this portion of the casing is used I place downwardly projecting lugs H thereon, so formed as to be made available for supporting the casing by engaging cross rods H, above which a cement construction J may be so placed as to safely support the cover and form a close secure top to the well. The upper surface of the casing B is depressed at b for the reception of the cover E, and is of suflicient depth so that the upper surface of the cover will be upon a level with, or below the upper surface of the casing, and this cover is held upon the casing by passing one edge under the pump flange G and the other edge under the lip or button 6, as indicated in Figs. 2 and 5.
The casing B has a projection C with an opening C to the main well opening. This projection is designed to receive the pump- F, at one side of the well opening proper so that the cover of the well may be removed or replaced without the necessity of disturbing the pump, or the pump may be readily removed from the well by passing itsidewise through the opening Ginto the main well opening, said pump being securely supported 011 the rim B G of the easing and secured with bolts f, as indicated in Fig. 2. I prefer that the flange D depending from the pump support or projection C be placed near the outer edge of the top of the casing so that, if necessary, the inwardly projecting rim may be cut away to allow of placing a pump in position that is Wider than the normal diameter of the opening in the projection C.
My completed casing has an under or lower annular plate A which is made separate from the upper casing B D and is provided with receptacles a a for the arms a a which are designed to rest on top of the wall I of the well I and to support the concrete work J, as indicated in Fig. 2. When the annular plate A is not used the rods H H are designed to rest upon the top of the wall I of the well and to act as support for any boards or other base the builder may conclude to place thereon for holding the concrete construction J.
lVith the construction hereinbefore described, and as shown in the drawings, I am able to avert all possible danger of insects, worms, &c., crawling into and contaminating the water in the well or cistern.
hat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. The combination in a well cover, of a casing having a large opening for the well proper and a small opening for the pump, and an open space between the two openings for the passage of the pump from the small opening to the large opening and vice versa, a flange projecting downward and a rim projecting outward, lugs extending downward from the rim on the flange, and means for supporting the casing on top of the wall of the well, and a cover to thecasing.
2. In a Well cover, a casing having a large round opening and a small circular opening with an opening between them, an outwardly projecting rim and a downwardly projecting flange comprising the casing, lugs on said casing, a lower annular plate detached from the casing and arranged to support the casing, a concrete construction between the annular plate and the flange, means for supporting the flange and casing upon the wall of a well, and a cover to the opening in the casing.
3. In a well cover, a casing formed with an outwardly projecting rim and a downwardly projecting flange and having a large circular opening and a smallcircular opening with a narrow opening connecting them for passing a pump from one to the other, lugs extending downwardly on the flange, a cover to the casing and means for clamping a pump over the small circular opening in position so that one edge of the pump flange will'engage and hold the cover of the large opening, a button for engaging and holding the opposite edge of the said cover, and means for supportlng the casing upon the wall of a well, with a cement rim engaging the casing.
