Specification of Letters Patent.
AppIication filed April 23, 1909.
Patented Feb. 1, 1910. Serial No. 491,793.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN E. TRIMBLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Albany, in the county of Delaware and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Recliniiighairs, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to produce a reclining chair comprising a seat member, a back member, and a foot rest which are connected together in such manner that the user may, with but slight exertion, and while seated in the chair, shift the parts relative to each other and maintain the same in shifted position without locking means, the parts being so flexibly connected as to readily yield to changes of position of the user.
The accompanying drawing, which is a vert-ical section, illust-rates an embodiment of my invention.
In the drawings, 10 indicates a main frame comprising side bars 11. Pivoted to each side bar 11 is a bell-crank lever 12 the'upper end of each of which is pivoted to the substantially horizontal sea-t member 13. Hinged at 14, to the rear edge of seat member 13, is a back member 15 which is pivotally connected to the main frame 10 at 16 above the seat member 13, the seat member 13 being thus supported upon the hinge 14 and the pivotal connection with the upper ends of the bell-crank levers 12. Pivoted to the main frame 11, to the rear of the levers 12, and upon each side bar 11, is the upper end of a link 17 the lower end of which is pivoted to the rear end of a foot rest arm 18 which extends forwardly beneath and beyond the front bar 19 of the main frame 10. Arms 18 at their front ends are connected by a suitable foot receiving platform 21. Each arm 18, at an intermediate point in its length, is pivotally connected to the lower end of a lever 22 the upper end of which is pivotally connected to the lower end of the adjacent lever 12. Each lever 22 is provided with a slot 23 into which is projected a pivot pin 24 carried by a bracket 25 secured to the side arm 11 of the main frame.
The operation is obvious. The user may, by exerting a backward pressure upon the upper end of the back member, cause the parts to swing to the position indicated by dotted lilies in the drawing, or to any intermediate position, the foot rest automatically rising as indicated. A downward pressure upon the foot rest will cause the parts to assume their normal position, and said parts will remain in any position of adjustment so long as the body of the user is not shifted.
I claim as my invention z- 1. A reclining chair comprising a main frame, a. back member pivotally connected to the main frame, a seat member hinged to the lower end of the back member, a pair of levers mounted upon the main frame and supporting the seat member, a foot rest arm, a link connecting the rear end of said foot rest arm with the main frame, and a lever connectingv the foot rest arm with the seatsupporting lever.
2. A reclining chair comprising a main frame, a back member pivotally connected to the main frame, a seat member hinged to the lower end of the back member, a pair of levers mounted upon the main frame and supporting the seat member, a foot rest arm, a link connecting the rear end of said foot rest arm with the main frame, and a lever mounted upon the main frame by a sliding pivotal connection connecting the foot rest arm with the seat-supporting lever.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal at Albany, Indiana, this eighteenth day of April, A. D. one thousand nine hundred and nine.
JOHN E. TRIMBLE.
