'N ITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HARVEY L. HEALD, OF GRANVILLE CENTER, PENNSYLVANIA.
GARMENT-HANGER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HAnvnY L. I-IEALD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Granville Center, in the county of Bradford and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garnient-IIangers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a new and simple form of garment hangers for use in supporting wearing apparel, like coats, trousers', skirts, vests, etc., in a manner whereby they remain smooth and preserve their shape.
The object of the invention is to provide a hanger of the character described by simple construction in which the arrangementis such as to enable the hanger to be folded so as to occupy but a small space for packing in a suit case or trunk and which can be readily extended when desired for use, said arrangement including a swivel hook support by which the hanger can be supported. Iturthermore, the object of the invention is to provide a garment hanger having gripping members toward each other and which are normally distended or separated under a slight spring tension.
Finally the object of the invention is to produce a garment hanger of the character described which will possess advantages in points of simplicity, utility, strength and durability, and proving` at the same time comparatively inexpensive of manufacture.
lith the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangements and combinations of parts hereinafter more fully set forth and described and more particularly pointed ont in the claims.
n* In describing the invention in detail, refqnce will be had to the accompanying d1.m\,'iiig, forming part of this specification wherein like characters'denote corresponding 13m-ts nn the several views and in which.
Figure l, 1s a perspective view of my invention with L Suspended coat appearing in Ottcd umg Fig 251s asectional view showing the means for secuifllg the 1109K Support to the strap. Fig. 3, 1S #plan vlew of 011@ of the arms showing the clamping ring.
In the drawings 1 indicates th hprizontal bar which comprises a single stran .Q WHG which I have shown to be round, but d0 not wish to limit myself to the use of ronld wire as wire of flat or oval section or flatstrip or sheet metal may be used. The bar 1 Patented J an. 18, 1910.
Serial No. 390,549.
is bent to form transverse portions 2 and 3 at each end and terminates in parallel arms at and t extending parallel with the bar 1. The ends of the arms are made rounding in order that any piece of apparel which may be desired to be supported thereon may be inserted therein very readily and easily.
Clamping rings 5 and 6 are secured over the bar 1 and the parallel arms to hold said arms in position with the bar 1 and at the same time provide a variable tension for the same, which tension is secured by moving the clamping rings to various positions upon the arms and bar, and which by this means .may be varied to meet the requirements of thick or thin materials held between said arms and bar.
Attached to its opposite ends and to the transverse portions 2 and 3, I secure a strap 7 made of leather, web, cloth, or other pliable and suitable material by means of eyelets 9, but said strap may be secured by sewing or other suitable means. In the center of strap 7, I provide a plate 11, through a hole in the center of which plate is inserted hook 10 which by means of a head is held in connection with plate 11 and which connection provides a swivel bearing and permits the hook to turn freely in the plate. The plate 11 is bent to incase strap 7 and piovides sufficient offset for the collar of a coat supported on the hanger. Then the hanger is not suspended or in use the strap 7 may be laid upon bar 1 and parallel arms 3 and et and for convenience in packing hook 10 may be given a slight turn and laid horizontally upon said strap and parallel bar 1 and parallel arms L and 41.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A garment hanger con'iprising a single wire having a horizontal portion bent to form transverse ends terminating in gripping arms extending toward each other and held in a plane with the horizontal portion by means of clamping rings, and a fabric or leather strap connected at each end to a wire and provided in the center with a swiveled hook as and for the purpose described.
2. In a garmenthanger of the character described, a wire bent to forni transverse portions at each end and terminating in .parallel gripping arms, said arms having rounded ends; a fabric or leather strap conhorizontal Wire and gripping arms, a fabric or leather strap having each enel Connected to the transverse portions of the Wire and a 15 plate approximately the contour of the said strap and a hook support swiveletl to the plate substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
