Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID A. TEETER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Xorth Plaintield, in the county of Somerset and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash- Locks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to improvements in window sash locks.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and practical device of this character which will effectively lock the sashes in their closed position, which will hold the sashes against lateral vibration or movement, which will be self locking when the window sashes assume their closed position and which will be easy to unlock and attractive in appearance.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel features of construction and the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure- 1 is a perspective view of portions of two window sashes showing the application of the invention thereto; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view; and Figs. 3 and 4: are perspective views of the two parts of the device.
In the drawings 1 denotes the upper bar or rail of the lower sash and 2 the lower bar or rail of the upper sash, on which bars are secured the two parts 3, i of my improved sash lock. The part or member 3 consists of a casing for a spring pressed locking bolt 5, said casing consisting of an enlarged hollow central portion 6 and oppositely projecting side flanges 7 apertured to receive screws or similar fastenings by means of which said member is secured upon the bar 2. The enlarged central portion 6 of the member 3 has a transverse guide rib 8 provided with a bearing opening to receive one end of the bolt 5, which latter has at its other or front end an enlarged portion or head 9. This head is of rectangular-shape in cross section and slides through a similar-shaped opening at the front end of the enlargement 6, the outer extremity of said head 9 being bev eled downwardly and forwardly, as shown at 10, for a purpose presently explained. Provided on the forward portion of the bolt is astop pin 11 to engage the inner face of the front end or wall of the cavity in the enlargement 6 and against which bears one end of a coil spring 12. This spring surrounds the intermediate portion of the'bolt 5 and has its other end bearing against the rib S. The other part or member 4 of the device is similar in shape and comprises a casing for a spring actuated bolt retracting pin 13. Said member a has at its side portions apertured attaching flanges let similar to the flanges 6 and its central portion is enlarged, as at 15, and provided with a cavity for the reception of the pin 13. Said pin is slidably mounted in an opening in the outer wall of the cavity in the enlargement 15 and also in an opening in a transverse rib 16 formed in said cavity. The inner end of said pin is disposed opposite and projects into an opening 17 formed in the inner end wall of the cavity in the enlargement 15 for the reception of the head 9 on the end of the bolt 5.
Arranged upon the pin 13 between the rib 16 and a transverse stop pin 18 in said pin 13 is a coil spring 19 which retracts the pin 13 and holds the head or finger piece 20 upon its front end at a suitable distance from the outer end wall of the enlargement 15. It will be seen that when the sashes are moved to their closed position the beveled end 10 of the head on the bolt 5 will spring into the socket or opening 17 in the member 4 and thereby cause the device to lock the sashes in closed position and that when the head 20 on the pin 13 is pushed inwardly said retracting or releasing pin 13 will push the head of the bolt out of the opening 17, thereby unlocking the sashes.
For the purpose of holding the two sashes firmly together when in locked position, and to effectively prevent lateral movement or vibration of the sashes, the front ends of the flanges 7 of the member 3 are formed with upwardly projecting V-shaped ribs 21 and the inner ends of the flanges 1 f on the member 1 are formed with downturned hook portions 22 shaped to receive the projections 21 when the sashes are in their closed position. This construction, it will be noted, not only prevents lateral vibration of the sashes with respect to each other but also strengthens the locking connection between them.
If desired, I may form upon the outer end of the member 4 an outwardly and downwardly curved finger piece 23 which may be used as a hand lift for raising the lower sash after the lock has been released. If desired,
the releasing pin 13 may be used without the spring 19.
Vhile I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of the invention, it will be understood that various changes in the form, proportion and arrangement of parts may be resorted to within the spirit and scope of the invention.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed is:
A sash fastening device comprising a latch member and a keeper member, each embodying a casing having laterally extending attaching flanges at the base thereof, the easing of the latch member having a transverse partition between its front and rear walls and being formed in its front wall and partition with openings, and the casing of the keeper member being similarly formed with a transverse partition and provided in its 1 front and rear walls and in said partition with registering openings, transverse V- shaped lugs on the front ends of the flanges of the latch member on opposite sides of and flush with the front end of the casing thereof, transverse V-shaped hooks on the front ends of the flanges of the keeper mem- T ber on opposite sides of and flush. with the front end of the casing thereof, said hooks being adapted to engage said lugs to draw the front walls of the casings in abutting contact and bring the openings in said walls into accurate register, the base portions of the casing being flush with the flanges to rest squarely upon the faces of the meeting rails of the sashes, a latch bolt having a beveled head to engage the openings in the front walls of the casings and a shank slidably mounted in the opening in the partition in the latch member, a spring about said shank between said front wall of the casing of the latch member and the partition for projecting said bolt, a releasing stem movable in the openings in the walls and partition of the casing of the keeper member, a retracting spring fixed at one end to said stem and bearing at its opposite end against the partition in said keeper member, and a push button upon the outer end of said stem.
