* barre sr JOHN F. RUGG, or OTTUMWA, IOWA.
FUNNEL.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN F. lines, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ottumwa, in the county of WVapello and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Funnels; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in funnels.
The object of the invention is to provide a funnel adapted for filling bottles, jars, casks, barrels, tanks and the like, having means formed thereon whereby the funnel will be firmly supported on the container to which it is applied, thus preventing the tipping of the funnel and the spilling of the liquid therefrom.
A further object is to provide a funnel so constructed as to permit the air to escape from the container into which the liquid is being poured, thus preventing the bubbling over of the liquid at the mouth of the container.
WVith these objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangements of parts as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims, hereto appended.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of this improved funnel; and Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional View thereof, and of a portion of a barrel showing the application of the funnel thereto.
In the drawings, is shown a funnel, 7, especially adapted for filling barrels or other cylindrical containers when in a horizontal position, said funnel, 7, having a tapering body portion, 8, and a discharge tube 9. To the lower outer side of the body portion 8 of the funnel 7 is secured an approximately inverted V-shaped supporting member or plate, 10, the lower edges of which are preferably curved inwardly or cut away, as shown. This member is formed by bending a metal strip or plate intermediately of its ends with an opening in its apex to receive the discharge tube and provide a seat for the lower end of the funnel body.
The funnel 7 is especially adapted for use in connection with barrels or other cylin- Specification of Letters Patent.

drical containers when laid down in horizontal position, and when so applied the discharge tube 9 is inserted in the bung-hole or other opening in the side of the container and the ends of the plate 10 are engaged with the sides of the barrel or container, thereby firmly supporting the funnel in position and preventing the same from being tilted or tipped while in use. The plate 10 also serves to support the lower portion of the body of the funnel 7 out of engagement with the edges of the bung-hole, thus permitting the escape of air from the barrel, and owing to the plate being open at its sides, a vent for the air thus escaping is provided. By providing the supporting plate 10 for the funnel, the latter is supported in position on the bottle or other container without being held by the party using the same, thus enabling the person to have the free use of both hands.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention may be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
1. A funnel comprising a conical body provided at its smaller end with a reduced discharge tube, and an elongated supporting plate bent intermediately of its ends to provide an approximately inverted V-shaped support having an opening in its apex to receive the discharge tube and provide a seat for the lower end of the funnel body, the legs of said support being of a length suflicient to support the body portion of the funnel above the container to which it is applied and spaced a suflicient distance to provide for the free passage of the air through the bung-hole or other opening, the latter being of larger diameter than the discharge pipe.
2. A funnel support comprising a plate bent intermediately of its ends into an approximately inverted V-shape and having an opening in its apex for the insertion of I my hand in presence of two subsoribingwitthe ii'funnel spout and to proiide a seat for nesses. the unnel body the legs 0 said su ort T being sufliciently long to support the fi l nel O RUGG' 5 body above the container and to permit a \Vitnesses:
free passage of air therebetween. J. R. JA Lms In testimony whereof I have hereunto set MABLE J AQUI-TS.
