FRANK H. HGVJARD, OF BROKSIDE, NEAR RlliIl'ITi'lrI .PENNSYLVANIA.A
CASTIN G-M ACHINE.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that l, lllmnn Il. l-iowmzo, a citizen ol the United States, residing at Brookside.. near Reading. in the county of Berks and State of lennsyl enla, have invented certain new and useful Improve nients in Casting-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention .relates to improvements in casting machines andit is intended more particularly for casting` journal bearings.
The invention consists oi a revolving table on which are located a number of machinesj each of which is capable of fori'ning' a casting in turn as the revolving table' presents it to the operator. These machines are each provided 'with an attachment for lowering,r the mold from the platen and also an attachmentfor raising the cope tl'lerefroni when the mold has been poured, so that. the bearing rests free to be lifted away from the machine when it reaches a point; opposite the operator who pours it. t
The object is lo provide for the rapid and cheap casting of uniform bearingsy Without the necessity of irst forming sand molds. VVit'h my device. the mold in one of the ma chilies is poured and the table on which the cast-ing machines are located is revolved. When the machine containing the casting reaches apoint opposite the pouring operator, a. second operator removes the bearing and by this means the operation of casting is continuous and rapidas there is no loss of .one casting being accomplished While another is being poured.
a-ving thus described the invention in general, l Will in thef'following specification set forth more fully the details of construction and operation, the construction being also fully and clearly illustrated in the aecompanyingl drawings. in which:-
Figure l is a :liront elevation7 slmwing the table in section. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view, taken on line 2-2 of Fig. l. Fig. 3 is ay vertical sectional view, taken on line 3-3 oli Fig. 2, but with the cope raised and turned at right angles, and Awith the drag lowered. Fig. l is a plan View of the table, Showing one of the machines in position, the other three being indicated by dot Specification of Letters Patent. Application tiled March 3, 1909.

led lines. Fig. 5 is a central vertical sec tional. View, taken at right angles to the view shown inf-Fig.
Y The numeral l desigl'ialesI the revolving table. l 2 the base thereof. 3 au annular track and l the wheels Secured to the under side of the table and which travel on said annular track.
Al'. a pointJ occupied by one of the operators. l provide a catch in the base, for securing the table and holding it while a casting is being' poured. This catch comprises a springbacked plunger 5 adapted to engage an opening (5 in the table. The plunger is operated by a loot pin T and an angled pivotcd arln 'When the table arrives` at the point where the opening l registers with the plunger 5 it. will snap into the opening` and hold the table against inovin l}r until released pressure on the pin 7. (ln this revolving table l secure number (prirferablr tour) ot' casting machines. These machines are identical in construction and each coniprises in its ineke up a traine l0, a top piece or platen l1 provided. with a central opening` 12. A drag of the desired torni for producing the casting 34, is arranged lo inove vertically in this opening. "lhisI draftr is inadc up of an upper portion t8, a tan perod portion 13'al at its base 'and a base plate '13"5 the three portions being formed integral and the base plate having formed .thereon a Sleeve 1.3 at either end in which it travels and is guided verticallyI on rods 33 secured to the under side of the top or platen 1l.. "This base plate is ren'lovably mounted on the top of a rod lll which is secured pivotally at. its lower extremity to a horizontal arm 16, ata. point approximately its longitudinal center. This arm 16 is pivotcd to the frame at one end, atl a point 17, and its opposite ond is formed with a. jaw 18, set at` right an gies to the body of the arm. Directly above this jaw, and in vertical alinenlent thercwith, l provide a second jaw piece 1U, formed on the under side of the top piece 1l and in each of these jaw pieces is pivoted a pair of arme E20 and the opposite ends o these arms are in turn, pivoted, each to one of a pair of toggle nuts 2l. These nuts are provided, one with a right-hand andthe on its top the drag. It is also clear that with this construction the movement of the drag Will he in n perfectly vertical line and that it is rapid and easy, due tothe double toggle device just described.
0n the top of each machine, and immedietely over the drag, l have showin` the cope 24C through which the inetzil is poured. This cope is provided with n series of very smell and irregularly arranged perforntions 9,5, ,tor the purpose of ventiiw. The cope is secured to an oscillating arm 26 which arm is removably mounted on the top of the vei'ti cal rod E27. This rod passes through the to i of the machine and its lower end has :i linli'. 27 pivoted thereon. et one of its ends find whose oppositefend is pivoted to :in erm 28 whose opposite extremity is pivoted to e lug 29 on the machine frame. At a point he tween the two extremities of this arm e pivotal. connection is mede with fin eccentric strap 31, which surrounds un eccentric 3Q and to this eccentric l secure n hand lever 3l for turnin it.
l/'Vhen t 'ie lever 3l through the eccentric, raise the arm 28 on its pivotal connection to the freine and consequently reise the rod 2?, thus lifting the kcope 2Lit'ree from the drag. When thus reised, thc cope may he swung on its iirm 26 with a circular 1novementout of the Way (Figi 3 shows it thus raised sind turned.) and the casting` may be raised from the Infichine, the drag havimT first been lovered iis above described und the openinglin the top or platen being such that the ends oit the casting will engage it suliciehtly, during its expanded condition, to revent its falling. When the hand leverSl is moved ns just described, the eccentric will keep it in the posiH tion placed, that is, when. it is moved iis indiceJ ed by the arrow (Fig. l) until it hns turned the eccentric :ist the center fus shown in Fig. 3) it wil remain there until the lever is again operated in the opposite direction, to lower it. i
The operation of the machine is both simlple end rapid. The pouring operator stands at one point of the table und pours the cestin s. The foot pin is opcrzited to release the tal le and. it is revolved until the next machine arrives at the operctcrs position when the is moved, it will,A
cstch will autometicelly engage and hold. the table. As cach machine arrives at n ioint opposite the pouringoperator, a, secon operetor removes the casting there-trom.
The cope. and dra@ nre looth removable, so that castings of dwerent size or form may be mede on the seme machine. To remove the cope, it is lifted, together with its carrying arm 26, from the top lof the rod 27 und another cope provided with o. like crm, is placed in osition on the rod. To remove lfhe drag, tic nuts on the lower ends of the guide rods 33 :ire removed as is also the pin by ineens of which it is secured to the top of the rod le, when it may be readily rc'- inoved and replaced hy :mother of the desired form or size.
Hoving thus fully described my invention and its operation, what l claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. in n. int-.tail casting machine, :i revolving trible, n loose, iin annuler truck, wheels adapted to travel on ssiid truck, means for engaging und holding;` seid table agonist i ioveinent, e. plurality of casting devices lo# cated on seid trible erich device comprising in its ineke u` fi frame; e drag; meer s coinprising n. dou le toggle, a vertical rod and e horizontal pivotcd lever, for lowering and raising said drng; :i perforated cope; un oscilletinl erin onivhic :ind mecnsl comprising o.. vertical rod, en arm pivoled to the freine nud un eccentric, for raising and lowering the cope.
