Description

- J. KNAPE. ADJUSTABLE BRACKET. APPLICATION P ILED FEB. 9, 1909.
941,682. Patented Now-30,1909.
JOI-IN KNAPE, OF GRAND RABIDS, MICHIGAN.
ADJUSTABLE BRACKET.
Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 30, 1909.
Application filed February 9, 1909. Serial No. 476,900.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN KNAPE, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Brackets; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descrip tion of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appel'- tains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in adjustable brackets, and its object is to provide the same with improved interlocking means to hold the bracket securely and rigidly, and to provide the device with various new and useful features, hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the ac companying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective of a device embodying my invention; Fig. 2 a det-ail in side elevation, and with parts broken away to show the construction; Fig. 3 a front elevation of the channel bar with the fastening means in section in the plane of the face of the bar; Fig. 4 a vertical section of the arm on the line 4 4 of Fig. 2; Fig. 5 an enlarged detail in horizontal section' on the line 5 5` of Fig. 2; and, Fig. 6 a detail of'a portion of the device in side elevation.
Like numbers refer to like parts in all of the figures.
l represents ay channel bar adapted to be secured to any suitable support and provided with keyhole slots 2 with the lateral opening thereof having converging sides as at 2a,
3 is an arm preferably of sheet metal arranged in a vertical plane and having an opening 4 near the upper corner adjacent to the channel bar, and a slot 4a extending from said opening to receive a bolt 7.
5 are side strips secured to the end of the arm 3 adjacent the channel bar 1, the edges of said side strips together with the end of the arm being in the same plane and forming an end surface adapted to rest rmly against the face of the channel bar. These side strips are swaged outward in opposite directions as at 6 to lit the neck 9 of the bolt, which neck is wedge shaped in cross section, whereby it fits firmly between the converging walls of the portion 2a of the keyhole slots, and can not be inserted in the arm in any other than the proper position, with the narrow side downward and the head of the bolt adapted to pass through the upper or circular portion of the keyhole slot. Opposite the lower ends of the side strips 5 are hooks 10 integral with said strips and adapted to enter the keyhole slots, and also provided with inclined forward surfaces opposite the lower corners of the strips 5, and oppositely inclined side surfaces ll to tit between the converging sides 2a of the keyhole slots. The bolt 7 is provided preferably with a suitable nut 8, whereby the head thereof is drawn tightly against the inner surface of the channel bar; the inclined surface of the hook l() and the clamping action of therbo'lt 9, thus firmly hold the end of the arm and the edges of the strips 5 against the face of the channel bar, and the wedge shaped neck 9 and inclined surfaces 1l of the hooks firmly wedged between the converging sides 2a prevent all lateral movement of the arm.
By loosening the bolt 7 the device may be readily detached land adjusted in various keyhole slots, which are spaced apart a suitable distance for such adjustment.
Obviously the arm may be made of a cast structure with the side strips 5 and hooks 10 integral therewith without departing from my invention.
l. An adjustable bracket, comprising a channel bar provided with keyhole slots having downwardly converging sides, an arm having an opening near t-he upper corner, a bolt extending into said opening and projecting from the arm, said bolt also having a neck wedge-shaped in cro-ss section to engage the converging sides of a slot, and a hook near the lower part of the arm having` converging sides to fit the converging sides of a slot.
2. An adjustable bracket, comprising a channel bar having keyhole slots, an arm consisting of a plate having an opening near its upper corner and a slot extending from said opening to receive a bolt, side strips secured to said arm and swaged opposite said slot to receive the bolt, hooks on said strips opposite the lower corner of said arm, and a bolt in said arm projecting within said opening and provided with a nut also within the opening.
3. An adjustable bracket, comprising a channel bar having a series of keyhole slots provided with downwardly converging sides, an arm having an opening near its said opening to receive the bolt, a bolt hav- `ing a neck wedge-shaped in cross section inserted in the arm and having a nut within said opening, side strips formed to t the wedge-Shaped neck of the bolt and secured to the endof the arm, and hooks on the side strips opposite the lower corner of the arm having inclined opposite sides to engage the converging sides of a keyhole slot.
4. An adjustable bracket, comprising a channel bar having a series of keyhole slots with downwardly converging sides, an arm having a flat end adapted to adjustably engage the face of the channel bar and also having an opening near its upper corner and a slot extending from said opening to receive the bolt, a bolt in said slot having a neck wedge-shaped in cross section and a nut within said opening, strips secured to the arm and swaged to fit the neck of the bolt and embrace the saine, and hooks on said strips near the lower corner of the arm, said hooks being inclined at the side toward the arni and also inclined at opposite sides to engage the converging sides of a keyhole slot.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN KNAPE.
