Description

G. B. GOODSPEED.
GAR TRUCK.
APPLICATION FILED AUG.12, 1909.
Patented Nov. 30, 1909.
INVENTOR GI-IARLES B. GOODSPEED, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
CAR-TRUCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 30, i d
Application filed. August 12, 1509. Serial No. 512,534.
To all :whom it may concern: I
Be it known thatI, CHARLES E. Goonv SPEED, of Chicago, in'the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oar-Trucks;
and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear,:and exact description of the invention, suc as will enable others skilled in the art to hich it appertains to make .and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in car trucks and more particularly to a spring plank construction therefor,-the object of the invention being to so construct a spring plank from a plate of metal that it shall possess adequate rigidity; be prevented from accidental displacement and so that it will serve the double purpose of a spring plank and also tying means for the side frames of the truck.
Vith this object in View the invention consists in certain novel features of con-' struction and combinations of parts as hereclaims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1.
is a side elevation of a car truck showing the application of my improvements thereto. Fig. 2 is a view partly in plan and partly in horizontal section of the samel Fig.1?) is a view in perspective of the spring plank,
and Fig. 4 is an edge view of-the same.
1,-1, represent the side'frames of a truck,
-' each. having a bolster opening "2 provided viiithparallel side-walls or columns 3.
The side-frames of the truckare tied together'by means of my improved spring plank 4; This spring plank comprises a sheet of metal having head portions 5 at its respective ends and between these head portions, the side edges of the sheet of metal' com osing the plank are slightly curved inwar ly and bent to form strengthening ribs 6 which are disposed substantially at right angles to the face of the plank. The head portions 5 of the spring plank are provided in opposite edges with recesses 7 which, when said head portions are placed in the bolster openings of the side frames of the umns of said bolster openings, -and,'on account of said connection of the spring plank with said side-walls or columns, the spring plank will serve to efiectually tie the side I frames, together.
In Fig. 1 of the drawing a bolster 8 is shown entering the boster opening of the side-frames 1 and springs 9 disposed between the bolster and the head portions of the spring plank.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure" by Letters Patent, is-
I. A spring plank for car trucks com prising a Hat plate having-depending integral ribs at its side edges between its ends and provided at the opposite sides of its ends with notches adapted to receive the truck columns. 1
2. A spring plank for a car truck, com-- prising a metal plate having head portions v at its-Lendsprovided in diametrically opposite edges w1th notches, having its side edges between said head portions curved inwardly and provided with strengthening ribs.
3. The combination with the side frames of a'car truck, said side frames having bolster openings with vertical side walls or columns, of a spring plank fiat on top having notches in diametrically opposite edges of its end portions, said notches receiving the side walls or columns of the bolster openings in the side frames of 'the truck, and strengthening ribs at the respective edges ofsaid spring plank between the notched end portions thereof.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specificationin the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
