Letters Patent No. 94,008,1la'ted August 24, 1869 IMPRovnn APPARATUS Foa cLARrr-YING CANE-JUICE BY MEANS or sULPHURoUs- Acrn GAS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all lwhom it may concern Be it known that I, Anonrs LABAUvE, of Convent, in the parish' of St. James, and State of Louisiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Clarifying Cane-Juice; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification.
The figure is a vertical section of my improved apparatus. v
My invention has for its object tofurnish an improvement in clarifying cane-jnice,and other liquids, with sulpburic acid, which shall be. simple andI effective, and conveniently applied; and
It consists in'the construction and combination of the various part-s of the apparatus, as hereinafter more fully described.
As the size of the apparatus may be varied according to the amount of work to be done, the dimensions herein given should be taken as suggested proportional dimensions, rather than absolute dimensions.
A represents a pump twelve feet in length, and six by four inches inside measurement.
B is the pump-rod, to the lowerend of which is attached the valve-box C, provided with two or more valves D at its upper end, opening upward.
The upper end of the pump-rod B passes up. through the upper end of the pump A, and may be worked by a lever or pump-handle in the ordinary manner.
The lower end of the pump Ais set in a vat containing the cane-juice, or other liquid .to be clarified, or is connected with the vat or reservoir containing said juice or liquid, in such a way that the said juice or liquid may pass freely through the opening al into the pump A.
The opening a-l, at its upper end, isprovided with a valve E, openingv upward, so that when the piston C D is raised, the atmospheric pressure may force the said juice or liquid into the pump A. v
F is the pipe or tube through which the gas is con-v ducted into the pump A, through the opening u?.
The opening a?, atits inner end, is provided with a valve, G, opening upward, so that when the piston 0 D is raised, the gas may raise the valve G, and enter the pump A at the same time with the juice or other liquid to be clarified.
As the piston C D descends, its pressure uponthe gas and liquid closes the valves E and G, to prevent the back flow of said liquid and gas, and at the same time raises the valve or Valves D, so that, as the said. piston C D continues to descend, the gas and liquid may pass into the upper part of the pump A. v'
As the piston C D rises, the valve or valves D close, andthe intermingled gas and liquid are raised and forced through the opening ai, in the upper part of the pump A, into the upper part of the compartment H.y
The compartment-H is eight feet high, and six by ten inches inside measurement. The interior of thev compartment is divided up by horizontal cross-partitions I, perforated with numerous holes about threequarters of al1-inch in diameter.
,J represents the opening or discharge-.pipe at the bottom of the compartment H, through which the gas and clarified liquid escape from the apparatus.
By this arrangement, the gas and liquid become thoroughly intermingled during their passage through the apparatus, every part of the liquid being brought intol immediate contact with the gas, so that the clarifying will be thorough and complete.
Having thus described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The arrangement, with 4relation to the pump A, containing the piston and valves, of the j nice-passage al, gas-passage F a2, and the compartment H, containing the perforated shelves I, as herein descn'bed,'for the purpose specified.
