PENCIL-POINT SHARPENEE.

Specificetion of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 2, 1909.
Application filed January 29, 1909. seriaino. Mensa.
Tue/ l 212710172 it may concern:;
Be it known that I, AnoLrH W. ELSNER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Pencil-Point Sharpeners, of which the following is afull, clear,
and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, oi this specification.
invention relates to a device providing a sharpener for the points ofde'ad pencils, in which there is one element that serves as a holder for abrasive material and sis a knife casing or pocket member, and a second element that serves as a handle for the first named element and for a knife blade that occupies the pocket in the first hamed element when the knife is not in use.
.higure l is a side elevation of my device. Fig. ii is e. nongitudiuul section of the easing and holder of my device. Fig. III is an elevation of the handle of the-casing cud holder and knife blade. Fig. IV is a. cross section taken on line IV-IV, Fig. l.
in the accompanying drawings, 1 designates a. wooden. abrasive material holder and easing provided at its ends with heads 2 having depressed surfaces between the heads ehd containing a pocket 3, open at the forward end of the holder and closed at the rear holder is of polygonal t'eraloly four sided, and it forming part shape, hcsettac. feces beneath the planes of the sides of the heads 2, strips 4.: of: abrasive material. The abrasive strips are covered with abrasive substance, such as sand, emery, or carborundum, and the abrasive substances upon the strips are of difierent grades, thereby providing for the rapid aoreding of a lead pencil oint when it i rubbed upon one strip 4, having a. co r. "e ardent thereon, and a less rapid chi-siding action when the pencil point is rubbed upon a strip 4, havingthereon an ahrudunt that liner than that on the first named strip. Upon one of the sides of the holder 1 is e Wiper strip 5, seeFig. IV, preferably of cloth, and upon which pencil points may be rubbed after being sharpened to remove therefrom particles of lead and render the points clean and smutless.
An iznpertant feature of the abrada-nt holder is the provision of the heads 2 at its ends which are larger than the body of the holder between said heads on which abredant substance is present. As a consequence of the presence of these heads, the abradu-nt surfaces on the holder lie beneath the planes of the sides of the heads and when the holder is laid upon a. piece of paper, such as a drawing, the abradunt surfaces are held out of contact with the paper to prevent the transference of particles of lead to the paper to soil it.
(3 designates a wooden handle provided at its inner end with a smooth stem 7 that is removuhly fitted into the pocket in the holder 1 and has mounted in it a combined whittling and erasing knife blade Upon the stem of the handle 6 is a metal ferrule 9 by which the knife blade 8 is held in said handle. This metal ferrule furnishes a nonshrinking and non-expanding bearing men1- her for engagement with the holder 1 when the stern of the handle is entered into the holder as distinguished from the use of the wooden stein alone which, if used without the ferrule, would be subject to shrinkage or expansion, due to atmospheric changes and be'rendered unfit to properly seat inthe holder.
Vi hen the abrasive strip holder is in use,
the handle 6 is fitted thereto, seen in Fig.
I to provide a convenient means :t'orholding and turning said holdr during its use, and when the knife is to be used tor whittlinq or shaving the wood from around,
the leaa. of a lead pencil, previous to abrading the pencil point, the handle muy be instantly withdrew-n from the holder and serve as the handle for the knife during the use thereof.
It is obvious that either of the 4 upon the holder of my device may no of such nature as to serve an chi-admit or sharpener -for the ltnife blades, so that said knife blade may he sharpened any time when it becomes dulled, without the necessity of using anything aside from the device itself for sharpening such knife blade.
My device constitutes an extremely ellicient and handy implement. for the use of dra'ltsmen and stenogrephers for the reason that it. includes in :1 single device all the appliances necessary in removing the wood to roduce pencil points and then shmoen sai points.
I claim depressed surfaces; the handle of the knife A pencil point sharpener comprising a also providing a handle for the casing and knife handle and a combined Whittling and bolder.-
' erasing knife blade in alinement with the ADOLPH W. ELSNER. 5 handle, and a knife blade casing and bolder In the presence 0f-- having depressed surfaces forming heads H. G. C0011,
and lead abrading strips located on the EDNA BI LINN.
