To all whom 'it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN EDMoNDsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Blossburg, in the county of Jefferson, State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Umbrellas; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enableothers skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

The invention relates to folding umbrellas and more particularly to the class of umbrellas adapted to be folded in a compact manner to permit the same to be carried in a Satchel or the like.

The primary object of the invention is the provision of a folding umbrella comprising a staff formed of separable sections, ribs pivotally connected to the staff and each formed of sections hinged together to permit the folding of the same, and means provided on the inner rib section to hold the outer rib section against folding` upon the inner rib section when the umbrella is being opened or closed foi` ordinary service.

Another object of the invention is the provision of a folding umbrella comprising a staff of separable sections, rib sections pivotallyl connected to the staff and having outer foldable rib sections, and means for preventing the folding of the outer rib sections during the ordinary use of the umbrella.

A further object of the invention is the provision of a folding umbrella which is simple in construction, thoroughly efficient in operation and one that is readily and easily folded in a compact manner and which is inexpensive in the manufacture.

With these and' other objects in view the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings which disclose the preferred form of embodiment of the invention and as brought out in the appended claim.

In the drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation of the umbrella constructed in accordance with the. invention and in a raised position. Fig. 2 is a similar view with the umbrella in a folded position and the handle sections of the stai detached. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary top plan view of one rib showing the sections thereof in alinement and in locked position. Fig. 4 is a sectional view on the line 4 4 of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a longitudinal sectional view through Fig. 3. Fig. G is a fragmentary sectional view of the staff sections joined. Fig. 7 is a fragmentary detail view of the hinge connection of one stretcher with a slidable sleeve mounted thereon and in section.

Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawings.

Inthe drawings, the numeral G designates the staff or stick of the umbrella which comprises an upper section 7 to which is detachably connected a section 8 the latter having detachably connected thereto a handle 9 and fixed to the upper section 7 is a crown piece 10 to which is pivotally connected a plurality of ribs 11 each comprising an inner section 12 the same being channeled as at 13 and of substantially U-shape in cross section. Connected a distance removed from the outer free end of each inner section by a pivot 14 is the inner end of an outer folding rib seotion 15. It is obvious that due to the pivot connection 14 of the outer rib sections 15 the latter are adapted and permitted to be folded upwardly and against the inner rib sections 12 when desired.

The extended end portions of the rib sections 12 beyond the pivots 14 of the outer rib sections 15 are formed with opposed yieldable flanges or lips 16 to frictionally engage opposite sides of the outer rib sections 15 when the latter are swung upwardly and outwardly into substantial alinement with the inner rib sections, so that the said outer rib sections will be securely locked or maintained against accidental displacement when in this position.

Slidably mounted on the staff 6 in a runner 17 the latter being of the usual construction and has pivotally connected thereto the inner ends of stretchers 18 which latter have their outer ends pivotally connected to ears 19 projecting from the inner rib sections 12 and upon movement of the said runner on the staff the umbrella can be brought to an opened or closed position.

The runner 17 is held in place when the umbrella is opened by a catch member 2O which is fitted in a suitable kerf in the upper section 7 of the staff, and is adapted to engage in a suitable slot formed in the said runner in the usual manner. To hold the umbrella in a closed position there is proifo vided a catch member 21 mounted in a like manner with respect to the catch member 20 in the section 8 of the sta.

To .the ribs 11 of the umbrella there is con.- nected a cover (not shown) which latter is earried by the ribs in the usual manner. To open. the umbrella when it is folded compactly the sections of the sta are connected together, the rib sections 15 are swung outwardly from the rib sections 12 so as to have said rib sections 15 enter the extension portions of the rib sections 12 and be frictionally engaged with the flanges or lips 16 and to have the said outer rib sections 15 in alinement with the inner rib sections 12 and then the runner 17 is moved upon the staH to actuate the stretehers to bring the same into proper position so that they will eect the opening and closing of the umbrella.

To close the umbrella the runner 17 is moved upon the stalll to bring the said runner in close proximity to the crown piece and the outer rib sections 15 are disengaged from the flanges or lips 16 and are swung upwardly and inwardly toward the inner rib sections thus folding the parts in a small compass when the section 8 and handle 9 are detached from the upper section of the sta-tf.

The stretchers 18 are formed on upper and lower sections hinged to each other to permit the proper folding of the umbrella and upon said stretcher are slidable sleeves 22 which latter serve to prevent the stretchers at their hinged joint from breaking during the ordinary use of the umbrella.

Vhat is claimed is.-

folding umbrella of the class described comprising a staii?, inner rib sections pivotally connected therewith, each of said inner rib sections being of substantially U-shape in cross section to form spaced parallel walls throughout their length, outer rib sections, and pivots connecting the inner ends of the outer rib sections between the parallel walls of the inner rib sections at a considerable distance removed from the free ends of the latter to permit the entrance of the outer rib sections into the inner rib sections when the same are swung in alinement with each other.
