ADOLPI-I F. STOELTING, 0F KIEL, WISCONSIN.
MILK-VAT.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AnoLrH F. SToEL'riNG, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Kiel,- in the county of Manitowoc and State of lViscoiisiii, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Milk-Vats; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention consists in what is hereinafter particularly described with reference to the accoi'npanying drawings and pointed out in the claims lof this specification, its object being' to provide economical, strong and durable milk-vats for cheese-inakers, particular attention being called to the framing of the vat shown and described, and to the joining of the sheet-metal sections that go to make up said vat. j
Figure l of the drawings represents a transverse section of a cheese-makers milkvat in accordance with my invention, this view being indicated by line `l--l in the next in numerical order of the illustrations.; Fig. 2, a plan view of the same inverted; Fig. 3, a contracted longitudinal section of a fragment of said vat, Fig. 4, a transverse section of a fragment ofthe aforesaid vat on lines a l in Fig. 2, and Fig. 5, a view of a detail of the structure.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A indicates the milk-receptacle of the vat as a whole, this receptacle being sheet-metal in sections having depending and lateral contiguous flanges in fluid-tight union, which construction, broadly considered, is not novel in the art, but my peculiar joining of said flanges differs materially from the ordinary manner of uniting the same, whereby I obtain tighter joints, do away with strengthening-bars or disks and avoid a great deal of riveting without sacrifice of rigidity and bracing qualities of the joined flanges, that constitute strengthening webs of said receptacle. To this end the depending longitudinal, transverse and lateral flanges of certain of the sections of the `receptacle aforesaid are recurved to forni strengthening folds b, and similar flanges of the remainder of the sections of said receptacle are recurved to form like folds c in which the folds aforesaid are seated, the result being seams that are suitably compressed. The seams are outwardly self-closed and inwardly soldered to make the joints of the sections of the aforesaid receptacle absolutely fluid-tight. At
Specification of LettersPatent.

the junction of the longitudinal and transverse seams aforesaid, central of the bottom of the receptacle A, corner-irons d are riveted to said seams to brace the same, and said transverse seams and the lateral seams of said receptacle are braced by plates c riveted thereto upon opposite sides.
The receptacle A is provided with the usual upper -horizontal flanges f that are tacked or otherwise suitably secured to end and side bars B of a preferably wooden rectangular frame. Suspended in connection with these bars are `hangers C fastened at their lower ends to angle-iron end and sidebars C of a cradle for the receptacle A, said side vbars of the cradle being riveted to transverse trusses D that break joints with the aforesaid .hangers to divide the strain of said receptacle and its contents on the cradle. Extending between the bottom of the receptacle A and the trusses D of the cradle, longitudinally of said receptacle, are channeliron braces E riveted at their extremities to the angle-iron end-bars of said cradle and to angular brackets g that are in turn riveted to transverse seams of the aforesaid receptacfle. The channel-bars are intermediate of the longitudinal seams and sides of the receptacle A and with the trusses aforesaid prevent sagging of said receptacle under weight of its contents. It is preferable to fasten wooden cushion-blocks 71, in the channel-irons from which they extend to rest upon the bottom of the heating tank of ordinary construction (not shown) in which the vat is suspended by its rectangular upper frame. It is also preferable to fasten each truss D to an overlying seam c by a hookbolt z' or other suitable means.
From the foregoing it will be understood that I do away with any and all wooden strengthening devices for the receptacle A, it having been found that such devices ordinarily employed in vat-s of the kind described deteriorate rapidly under the conditions to which they are subjected, the all metal cradle aforesaid being an important feature of my invention.
I claim:
l. In a cheese-makers milk-vat, the milk receptacle and a cradle for same comprising an upper suspending frame designed to rest upon a heating-tank, hangers depending from said frame, supporting side bars suspended by the hangers, transverse trusses connecting the side bars between hangers, and longitudinal braces at intervals between the bottom of said receptacle and the trusses.
2. ln a cheese-makers milk-vat, the milk receptacle and a cradle for same comprising an upper suspending frame designed to rest upon a heating tank, hangers depending` from said frame, supporting` side bars suspended by the hangers, transverse trusses connecting the side bars between hangers, longitudinal braces at intervals between the bottom of said receptacle and the trusses, and cushion-blocks in connection with said braces.
3. ln a cheese-makers milk-vat, the milkreceptacle and a cradle for same comprising an upper suspending frame designed to rest upon a heating tank, hangers depending from said frame, a lower supporting frame fastened to the hangers, transverse trusses connecting the side bars of the lower frame between hangers, and longitudinal braces at intervals between the bottom of said receptacle and the trusses.
4. In a cheese-inakers milk-vat, the milkreceptacle and a cradle for saine comprising an upper suspending frame designed to rest upon a heating tank, hangers depending from said frame, a lower supporting frame fastened to the hangers, transverse trusses connecting the side bars of the lower frame between hangers, longitudinal braces at intervals between the bottom of said receptacle and the trusses, and cushion-blocks h in connection with said braces.
5. In a cheese-makers milk-vat, the milk- Yreceptacle and a cradle for same comprising an upper suspending frame designed to rest upon a heating tank, hangers depending froin said frame, a lower supporting frame fastened to the hangers, transverse trusses connecting the side-bars of the lower frame between hangers, and longitudinal braces fastened to depending transverse seams of said receptacle and ends of said supporting frame between the trusses and the bottom of the aforesaid receptacle.
6. ln a cheese-inakers milk-vat, the milkreceptacle having depending longitudinal seams, a cradle for the receptacle comprising an upper suspending frame designed to rest upon a heating tank, hangers depending from the frame, supporting side bars suspended by the hangers, transverse trusses in connection with said seams and said side bars between hangers, and longitudinal braces at intervals between the bottom of said receptacle and trusses.
T. ln a cheese-maliens milk-vat, the milkreceptacle having depending longitudinal seams, a cradle for the receptacle comprising an upper suspending frame designed to rest upon a heating tank, hangers depending from said frame, lower supporting frame fastened to the hangers, transverse trusses in connection with said seams and the side bars of 'the lower frame between hangers, and longitndinal braces at intervals between the bottoni of said receptacle and the trusses.
ln testimony7 that l cla-im the foregoing have hereunto set my hand at Kiel in the county of Manitowoc and State of VVisconsin in the presence of two witnesses.
