- My invention relates to improvements in fence-wire releasing-devices, and the object of my improvement is to provide securing means adapted to secure fence-wire to posts located on low lying lands or creek bottoms subject to inundation, such means being adapted to release the secured wire when by impact of floating objects or other means the wire is strained to the breaking point, or the said posts liable to be pulled from their emplacements.

Be it known that I, F RANK CUMMINGS, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Waterloo, Blackhawk county, Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fence-VVire-Releasing Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in fence-wire releasing-devices, and the object of my improvement is to provide securing means adapted to secure fence-wire to posts located on low lying lands or creek bottoms subject to inundation, such means being adapted to release the secured wire when by impact of floating objects or other means the wire is strained to the breaking point, or the said posts liable to be pulled from their emplacements.
This application is a division of my application Serial Number 448,501, on fencewire releasing-device, filed in the United States Patent Oflice on August 14., 1908.
The above object I have accomplished by the means which are hereinafter fully described and claimed, and which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a view of a wire-fence whose posts are planted transversely of a creek bottom, and which depicts the manner in which a wire is released from my improved fastening-means when it is brought under the considerable impact of a floating object. Fig. 2 is an enlarged side elevation ofmy improved fastening-means for securing a wire to a fence-post, showing it as holding an inclosed wire. Fig. 8 is another side elevation of said fastening-means, showing the manner in which the inclosed wire is released from it when under strain in a certain direction.

My improved fastening-means consists of a ring or eyelet 1 integral with a threaded shank or screw 7 This ring is split at 6 in the axial line of the screw, and is in the form of the ring shown in Fig. 3 before a wire at is inserted, said view serving equally well to indicate either the method of introducing the wire or of releasing it.
In practice the said fastening devices are mounted in the posts on the downstream side, as is indicated in Fig. 1. The inner curve of the ring 1 may be notched at 5 at the break 6, to afford a catch and seat for the wire 4 when pushed by a floating object such as the log 2, and which aids in releasing the wire by locating it at its point of exit through said split 6. When the wire has been pushed through the split 6, it can move upward or downward, and thus allow the floating object to pass under or over it, without breaking the wire or uprooting the post 3. By this means not only is breakage of wires and loss of posts avoided, but a saving of labor is also made, since it is very easy to slip the wire 4 back into the spread ring and then clench the ring together again by any suitable tool.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
In combination, fixed supports, a wire having its ends secured to two of said supports and having a portion of its length adjacent to a third, a divided eyelet projecting from the latter support and adapted to removably secure said wire therein, the divided parts of said eyelet being adapted to spread to release said wire therefrom when a certain pressure is exercised against the wire in a direction toward the line of division thereof.
