CULTIVATOR ATTACHMENT.

To all whom 'it may concern:

Be it known that l, W'ILLIAM LiNDEsMrrI-r, a citizen of the United States, residing at Katie, in the county of Garvin, State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Cultivator Attachments; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to attachments for cultivators and has for its object to provide a simply constructed device of this character which combines all of the advantages of an ordinary rolling and cutting colter, and a trash or weed divider. j

lVith these and other objects in view the invention consists in a foot piece or standard adapted to be adjustably and det-achably connected to the beam portion of a cultivator and provided with a lateral extension at the lower end forming an axle or journal for the colter, the colter comprising a hub mounted for rotation upon the axle or ournal, a cutting rim connected to the hub by relatively small wire spokes, the cutting rim operating to form a channel or cleft in alongside the shovels to define the soil which is to be acted upon by the shovels, and also to turn the trash and weeds away from the cultivator and prevent them from clogging the standards of the saine.

rlhe invention further consists in a vertical standard adapted to be detachably and removably coupled to the beam of a cultivator and with a lateral projection at the lower end forming an axle or journal, a colter comprising a hub mounted for rotation upon the axle or journal, a cutting rim, relatively small wire spokes between the hub and rim, and guard elements carried by the axle and bearing over the hub from its opposite ends, with their inner edges in close proximity to the spokes of the colter.

The invention further consists in certain novel features of construction as hereafter shown and described, and then specifically pointed out in the claim, and in the drawings illustrating the preferred embodiment of the invention.

'lie improved device may be applied to any of the various forms of plows, cultivators, listers, and similar implements, but for the purpose of illustration is shown applied to a conventional cultivator structure comprising spaced beams QQ provided respectively with cross heads 2T23 to which the cultivator standards or beams are connected, the outer beams 29-30 trailing rearwardly of the cross heads and the inner standards 31-32 disposed vertically through the cross heads inside the beams, the shovels 33-31 of the standards 31-32 thus traveling opposite each other and forwardly of the cross heads, while the shovels 35-36 of the outer beams 29-30 travel rearwardly of the cross heads in the usual manner.

The improved detachment comprises a standard 10 for each cross head preferably square or of other than circular form and each provided at its upper end with means such as a clip 11 whereby it may be coupled removably and adjustably to the cross head inside the shovel standards 31-32.

At its lower end each of the standards 10 is formed with a lateral offset or extension 13 which fo-rms an axle or journal for the colter. The colter comprises a hub 111 and a cutting rim 15, the latter formed of a thin annular plate and connected to the hub by a plurality of relatively 16, the spokes spaced at suiiicient distances apart to provide the requisite support for the rim.

Mounted upon the axle 13 at opposite ends of the hub 1li are guard elements, the guard elements formed with hubs 17-18 and inwardly and outwardly curving hoods 19-20, the hubs bearing against the ends of the colter hub 14 and the hoods 19-20 vextending inwardly over the hub 111 with their inner edges in close proximity to the spokes 16, and thus forming sand guards and shields to the hub 14, to prevent contact therewith by the weeds, trash or other material through which the cultivator and colter operate. The collars 17H18 are secured in an suitable manner to the axle 13, preferably by strong pins ,21;22, so that the colter together with the guard elements may be easily detached from the axle when required. The axle 13 may be of any required length, so that the cutting rim 15 may be located in small wire spokes lll) any desired position laterally ofy the line of travel of the shovels, and the standard l0 may be adjusted to any required degree relative to the cross head, so that the colter may be arranged to operate any required distance from the shovels within the range of the axle, as will be obvious. The annular cutting rim l5 may be of any required size but for ordinary purposes will be about ten inches in diameter with the rim about one and one-half inches wide, and with the spokes spaced apart about one and one-half inches at their juncture with the rim, but it will be understood that it isl not desired to limit the invention to any specific dimensions for the parts and these dimensions may be varied as required without departing from the principle of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages. By this construction of colter it will be obvious that clogs or tufts of weeds or grass will be held back and prevented from passing inwardly to become clogged with the beams of the cultivator, while at the same time the liner or pulverized earth will freely pass through the spokes.

The improved device is simple in construction, may be readily applied to'cultivators of various forms, and may be inexpensively manufactured and applied by any person without previous skill or experience.

That is claimed, is

In a device of the class described, the comhina-tion of a stationary head member, a vertical standard carrying a cultivator shovel, a standard having v a lateral offset at its lower ends, means for adjustably connecting said last mentioned standard to said stat-ionary head, a colter including an annular cutting rim and a plurality of spokes extending between the hub and rim and formed of relatively ne wire7 guard hoods having central hubs engaging said offset at each end of the colter hub and extending inwardly over the saine and terminating at their inner ends close to the spokes, and means for detachably securing they guard hoods upon the oset.
