Description

D. P. SHAW. APPARATUS FOR GHALKING-BILLIARD CUES.
No. 93,356. Patented Aug. 3, 1869. Q
v l I I l 0 ""0 a! I a 8M W I I I 1 m (defied $111M D. P. SHAW, OF ELKHART, INDIANA.
Letters Patent No. 93,356, dated August 3, 1869.
APPARATUS FOR CHALKING- BILLIARD-CUES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, 1). I. SHAW, of Elkhart, in the county of Elkhart, and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements iii-Machines for Ohalking Billiard-Ones, &c.; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being-had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- 'Figure 1 represents, in perspective, a case, and so much'of the apparatus as protrudes therefrom, so that the train-gears may be protected from dust, 850.
Figure 2 represents a horizontal section through the same,- and showing the interior arrangement of the which may be driven by the uncoiling of a wound spring, or by a falling weight or other well-known driving-power, by slight pressure applied to the chalking-mechanism by the point of the cue to be chalked, the chalk being rotated against the leather of the one by the tlZtll l-gF-ill.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the same with reference to the drawings.
A represents a box, case, or cover, and B, the door thereof.
(in the inside of this door is arranged a frame, a a, for holding the drivirig-mechanism, consisting substantially of a coiled main or driving-spring, I), on a winding-shaft, c, and upon this same shaft 0 is placed a driving-gear; d, with a ratchet-and-pawl attachment, 0, so that the spring may be wound up without driving the gears.
The gear (1 works in a pinion, f, on a shaft, 1 and thus this shaft g is driven.
On the shaft gthere is a gear-wheel, h, which meshes with a pinion, i, on the shaftj, on which the regulator k is placed, to steady the running of the gearing.
The shaft 9 has-end motion in its bearings, but is forced outward by means of'the spring I constantly pressing against its inner end, which spring-pressure also presses the gear h close up against the block or frame 0, in which there are one or more studs 0, which studs, catching the arms or spokes of the wheel 7:,
stop and hold it, and prevent its running, which-stop .dri ven by a falling weight instead of the coiled spring, or
other traiu-gears may be used for rotating the chalkholder andthe chalk therein.
The gears rotate the chalk, and the point of the one simply throws in the escapement, to allow the gears and chalk to rotate. ,7
When themachine is wound up, it is only necessary to place the point of the cue upon the chalk nand press gently inward; This pressure moves the shaft g endwise against the spring I, and moves the wheel h away from the stud a, that holds it. The gears, thus relieved,
immediately begin-to run, as also the chalk and its holder, the chalk running in contact with the end of the one, and chalking it. i I When the point of the one is removed from the chalk, the spring I reacts, forcing the wheel h where the stud 0 will catch and hold it until another chalking-operation is required. 1
The-pressure of the cue upon the chalk is not the power that rotates the chalk. This pressure simply throws a driven train-gear into action, which gear moves the chalk.
Having thus fully described my invention,
What I claim therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Ohalking a one by means of a train of driven gears," when said gears are set in motion by pressing the one against the chalk or its holder, and stopped by removing the pressure, substantially as described.
