Patented Sept. 7, 1909;
Application sad-numb a, 1008. Seth-1N0. 460,810.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, DAVID ATHnR'roN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Phili sburg, in the county of Center and State 0 Fegmsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Paving-Block, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to rovide a new and improved paving block, 0 which a series can be convenlentl assembled to interto formtransverse interlocking courses or rows, with a view to prevent transverse shifting of the blocks in the roadway even if the roadway is without curbs. V
- The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, which will be more fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims. I
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate cor responding parts in all the views.
Figure l is aplan view of the improvement showing a number of courses of blocks forming the roadway; Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspective view of one of the blocks; and Fig. 3' is a vertical section of the same on the line 33 of Fig.2.
The' paving, blocks A for forming the roadway, are alikc'in construction and are arranged in transverse courses in such a manner that the blocks in successive courses break joints, and the joints 0 all the courses extend in a zi zag line t nsversely of the road bed, as indicated in Fig. .1. In order to accomplish this result, each block A has both sides A, A made V-shape, so that the half of the side of a blditli .in one course fits a correspondin half of a block in the adjacent course, wEereby the blocks in adjacent (301113988 are securely interlocked to prevent shifting in a transverse direction of the roadway. l
.The halves of a V-shaped side A of each block are provided with vertically disposed spacing ribs A, A, preferably locatedabout midway of each half, as plainly indicated in Figs. 1 and 2, the ribs A, A of the blocks in one course abutting against the nonribbed V-shaped sid'es A of the blocks in an adjacent course; so that suflicicnt space is formed between adjacent courses for the jreccpti'on of grouting or other binding material.
From the foregoing it will beseen that by constructing the block in the manner described, the blocks in' successive cdurses interlock with each other, and all the coilrses are interlocked, to prevent shifting'in a transverse direction of the blocks in the roadway. j
Havingthus'de'scribed any invention I claim as'new anddsire to secure by Letters Patent:
1'. A 'roadway comprising transverse courses of aving blocks, each block having both faces shaped and successive courses breaking joints. one-half of the side of a block in one course fitting acorresponding half of the block in the adjacent row, and vertical spacing ribs on the halves of one side of a block in one course abutting against the smooth halves of adjacent blocks in the next course i 2. 'A roadway comprising transverse courses of paving blocks, each block having both faces V-shaped. and successive courses breaking joints, one-half of the side of a block in one course fitting a corresponding half'oi a block in the adjacent row, vertical syncing ribs on the halves of one. side of a b ock in one course abutting against the smooth halves of the adjacent blocks in the next course, and a grouting material between the joints of successive courses.
In testimony whereof I have signed my 'name to this spccificatioirin the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
DAVID ATHER'ION.
