To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, J OHN WILKINS, a citizen of the United States, residing at'Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mattress-Supporters; and

and arranged to prevent the sliding of the mattress on the spring, and thus make the appearance of the bed more shapely, and at the same time add to the comfort of the occupant. The device is also arranged to cause the holding back of the corners of the mattress from engagement with the post of the bed so that the arrangement, on metallic bedsteads, of the cover is such that the cover can hang perpendicular between the mattress and the post of the bed.

Covers as now made are slit part way up on the corners so as to allow them to pass over the juncture of the side and end rails and the uprights of the bed, and when the mattress engages the post of the bed, theplacing into place of these corner pieces is tedious.

The present invention holds the mattress away from the post so that no pressure or forcing is necessary to properly put the cover or spread in place.

The device is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a broken side view of a bed provided with my improved holder. Fig. 2 is a plan of one side of the bed as shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a section of the side rail and the holder. Fig. 4 is a section of the juncture of the corner andend panels taken through line 4, 4, in Fig. 2, but on an enlarged scale. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one corner of the bed showing the application of the device.

The holder consists of panels adapted to be placed one on each side of the bed and one at the head and foot, preferably on metallic beds, each panel consisting of a right-angled bar 10 which sets down on the rail 11 of the bed and is secured thereto by having driven thereon a U-shaped clip 12, shown particularly in Figs. 2 and 3, so that the two parts are clamped tightly together, but are detachably secured. This particular means of fastening them together, however, can be altered into any of the usual forms of securing such devices to one another. Each rightangled bar is provided with vertical strips 13 which are connected by and secured to parallel horizontal strips 14, the top strip of each panel extending beyond the end vertical strips 13, the vertical strips being set back slightly from the ends of the rightangled bars 10. These ends can be permitted to project freely without any finish and hold the ends of the mattress, but I prefer to employ the curved corner strips 15 which have their ends overlapping the ends of the panels at their top strips, and the sleeves 16 are slid over the free ends of the corner pieces and over the free ends of the strips so as to pull in the corners of the mattress and hold them away from the post 17 of the bed, as shown in the lower left hand corner of Fig. 2, and as will also be seen from Fig. 5.

This device always holds the mattress and the spring in register so that there are no overlapping portions on the sides or either ends of the bed, and the labor of the housewife is made lighter on account of there not being the necessity of frequently adjusting the mattress on the bed. The device is easily installed and is just as easily removed.

Instead of using the curved corner pieces at the junctures of the side and head piece, I prefer to make the top strip 14 of the head piece long as shown in Fig. 2, and bend the end around and have it held to the top strip of the side panel by one of the clips 16 as shown in Fig. 2.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. The combination of a bed having right-angled rails, of a mattress holder comprising a set of panels, each panel having a right-angled bar, vertical strips projecting from each right-angled bar, horizontal strips connecting the vertlcal strips, U-shaped clips adapted to secure the right-angled bars and the bed rails together, curved corner strips, and means for detachably securing the ends of the curved corner strips to the ends of the panels.

2. A holder for mattresses comprising a set of panels, means for securing the panels to a bed, a horizontal strip on the top of each adapted to slide on the corner strips and secure .them to the horizontal strips of the panels.
