Description

I' To all whom lit ma/y concern:
struction of buildings, intended Vto provide a combined @me amm,
JOSEPH Porre, Aor HARRISBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
Letters Patent No. 93,227, dated .August 3, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN BUILDINGS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent vand making -part of the lame.
Be it known that I, JOSEPH POTTS, of Harrisburg, in the county of Dauphin, and State ot' Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement-in the Constructionof Buildings; and I do hereby declare that the follwing is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the acompanying drawing, forming part of this specifica ion.
This invention relates to improvements in the lonarrangcment of brick and wood walls and framing, calculated tov so strengthen the brick portion thereof as to produce walls of the desired strength with fewer bricks than as now constructed. I
The drawing represents a partial elevation and section of a Wall constructed according to my improvement.
First, I construct a wood frame, A, of light mate-A rial, as for Weather-boarding, setting the studding ou the inner edge ofthe foundation walls. I then take ordinary bricks, laying them at, if for a' four-inch wall, or edgewise, making a two-inch wall, laying them with mortar, as in the usual way,as represented at B. Upon the t'op of each course, after the mortar has been spread on, I lay common lath, as represented at C, against the studs, bedding them into the mortar, and nailing them diagonally to the posts.
In this way I am enabled to bind the brick firmly to the studs, and produce a brick wall of equal strength with those ndw made, with' less thickness of material, and consequently cheaper.
It is also equally as safe against re from the out- Side l A t To makelthe wall more secure, I propose, in some cases, as for the fronts of houses, to form dovetail'ed rebates in the bricks at one corner, longitudinally, and make the strips with angular sides to fit therein, and more irmly lock the bricks to the studding, as shown at I). In this manner, I may use quite thick and strong strips, and yet lay the bricks closely together.
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- Y In the construction of buildings, laying up the bricks B upon the side of the Wooden ii'ame A, with the laths C or D embedded in the ,mortar between each course, and nailed to the frame, as herein shown and described, for the purpose specified.
, JOSEPH POTTS.
