BLAGKING-BOX.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 24., 1909.
Application filed August 21, 1908. Serial No. 449,627.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Josnri-r F. PINSON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Greenwood, in the county of Greenwood and State of South Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Blacking-Boxes, of which the following is a full and complete specification.
My invention relates to boxes for holding shoe or stove blacking and kindred products, and has for its object the provision of improvements consisting of a projection on the cover of the box, and a lever pivotally mounted on the side of the box to engage the projection in opening the box to lift the cover, said lever lying on top of the cover when the box is not in use, so that it is out of the way for storage and transportation.
My invention will be described in detail hereinafter and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side view of a blacking-box showing my improved opener in side elevation and the cover on the box; Fig. 2, a similar view, showing the box uncovered and the opener used as a handle; Fig. 3, a top plan view of the box and cover; and Fig. a section of a modification.
In the drawings similar reference characters indicate the corresponding parts in the several views.
The blacking-box A is of the ordinary flat type in general use and has the tight-fitting cover B.
As is well known, one of the great disadvantages in the use of box blacking is that the covers B have to be made so tight-fitting, to prevent evaporation of the moisture in the blacking, that the cover sticks to the box and causes annoyance in opening, said sticking being augmented by blacking, adhering to the side of the box after using, drying and adhering to the box and cover and holding the cover from removal.
In my improved blacking-box I provide a lug or projection 1 on the lower portion of mg lug on the box,
the box A below the line of the lower edge of the cover B when in position and pivotally secure an L-shaped handle or lever 2 thereon through the short arm 2 of said lever. The cover B has a lip or flange 3 extending laterally therefrom, said flange 3 being preferably made integral with the lower edge of the cover, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, though it is obvious that it may be made separate from the cover and soldered or otherwise secured thereto, as shown in Fig. 4.
It will be understood that when the cover is in position on the box the handle or lever 2 lies on the top of the box, which may be provided with a groove or depression therein to receive it, if desired, so that it takes up no room or space and is not likely to be thrown out of position or wrenched off in handling. hen, however, it is desired to open the box, the handle is swung upwardly from the cover causing the free end of the shorter arm 2* to engage the flange 3 and a continued swinging of the handle in the same direction will raise the cover from the box so that it can be removed without difiiculty.
As shown in Fig. 2, the lever 2 is capable of use as a handle for lifting the box.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- In combination with a blaoking-box and cover, a lip on the cover, a radially-extendand an L-shaped lever pivotally secured to said lug and swinging radially of the box, one end of said lever engaging said lip when swung to open the box, and the other end of the lever forming a handle to hold the box when open and lylng flat on the cover when in position on the box.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOE F. PINSON.
