HENRY AOKERMAN, OF JERSEY CITY HEIGHTS, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO JOHNG. NORDT, OF WEST HOBOKEN, NEW JERSEY.
SAFETY ATTACHMENT FOB PIN-TONGUES.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY AoKERuAN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Jersey City Heights, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety Attachments for Pin- Tongues, of which the following is specification.
This invention relates to an improved safety attachment for pin tongues such as are used for brooches, breast-pins and similar articles of jewelry so that they are protected against loss by theaccidental detachment of the pin-tongue and held securely in position; and the invention consists of a safety attachment for pintongues which comp 'ises a hook-shaped catch provided with a perforated ear opposite the hookshapcd end, and a clamping device or lock pivoted to said ear and the shank of the catch and adapted to enter the hook under the pin-tongue, said clamping device being provided with a U-shaped portion extending around the shank of the catch and with a bent-up rear-end by which the clamping device is swung into closed or open position for clamping or releasing the end of the pin-tongue when the same is placed in position in the hook-shaped catch, as will appear from the following description and claims.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a side-elevation of my improved afety-attachment for pin-tongues showing the safety attachment in position for holding the pin-tongue, Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the safety attachment in open posi tion as released from the pin-tongue, F ig. 3 is a vertical transverse section on line 3, 3, Fig. 1, drawn on a larger scale, and Figs.
t and 5 are perspective views drawn on a Specification of Letters Patent.-

heel (Z which abuts against a heel b on the ears Z) when the pin-tongue is placed into locked position in the hookshaped catch 0 which is attached to the opposite end of the pin a. The hook-shaped catch is preferably soldered at its lower part to the pin a, and provided at its base with a perforated ear 6 opposite the bent-over end of the hook. Between the perforated ear and the shank end of the catch 6 is pivoted a safety lock f, which is provided with a roundedott cam or heel f that binds on the end of the pin-tongue when the shank of the safetylock or tongue-locking device is moved in the plane of movement of the pin-tongue into upright position alongside the shank of the catch 0, as shown in Figs. 1, 3 and l. The safety-lock is provided adjacent to the heel with a laterally-extending U-shaped portion having at its free end a rearwardly-bent projection or handle-portion 7", the latter serving for swinging the safetylock into locked position, as shown in Fig. l, or in released position resting against the pin a, as shown in Fig. In the latter position the pintongue can be freely released from the hook-shaped catch so as to be swung on its pivot and passed. through the dress or other garment to which the brooch, breast-pin or other article of jewelry is to be applied.
The U-shaped portion of the safety-lock tits around and embraces the shank of the catch and holds, in connection with the upper hooked-portion of the catch 6, the pintongue firmly in position so as to prevent the accidental detachment. of the same from the hook-shaped catch and the loss of the brooch, breast-pin or other article of jewelry.
lVhen it is desired to release the safety device, it is taken hold of by the nail of the finger, at its projecting portion 7, and the safety-lock turned on its pivot away from the pin-tongue so as to release the same and permit the removal of the pin from the garment. WVhen the safety attachment is to be used, after the breech or other article of jewelry has been fastened to the garment the tin safety-lock is raised and thereby the end of the pin-tongue firmly locked in position so as to prevent the loss of the article.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In a safety attaclnncnt for pin-tongues,
the combination, with the pin-tongue and the catch, pita tongue-locking device com.- prising a shank pivoted at the base of the catch and movable in the plane of movement of the pin-tongue, and a lateral extension on said tongue-locking device by which it is manipulated.
2. In a safety attachment for pin-tongues, the combination, with the tongue and the hook-shaped catch, of an ear formed on the latter at the base thereof, and a tonguelocking shank pivoted between said ear and the shank of the catch and movable inthe plane of movement of the tongue into engagement with the latter within the hookedportionof the catch.
3. In a safetyattachment for pin-tongues, the combination, with the catch, of a pivoted tongue-locking device which fits around the catch.
4. In a safety attachment for pin-tongues, the combination, with the hook-shaped catch, of a pivoted tongue-locking device having a portion fitting Withi'nthe hook of the catch and a portion fitting about the shank of th catch.
5. In a safety attachment for pin-tongues, the combination, with the hook-shaped catch, of a tongue-locking device pivoted at the base of the catch and having a lateral eX- Itensi'on which: embraces the shank of the of a pivoted tongue-locking device having its free end arranged to enter the space Withi in the hook of the catch to clamp the tongue,
and a laterally-extending U-shaped portion formed on said tongue-locking device and which embraces the shank of the catch when the locking device is inv operative position.
7. In a safety attachment for pin-tongues, the combination, with the hook-shaped catch, of a tongue-locking device, a U-shaped portion extending laterally from said tonguelocking device and arranged to embrace the shank of the catch, and a projection on said U-shaped portion by which the locking device is manipulated.
In testimony, that I claim the foregoing as my invention, I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
HENRY AGKERMAN.
