HAT PIN;
APPLICATION FILED AUG.18,'1908.

UNITED STATES PATENT. O I
JosEPH A. MARTENS, or CORONA, SOUTH DAKOTA,
HAT-PIN.
Specification oi Letters Patent.
Application filed August 18,1908.
Patented July 27, 1909.
Serial No. 44.9,015.
provide a hat pin with a device by means of which its point may be covered and by which meansit may be held in place in the hat to whichit is applied.
In carrying out my inventionI provide a hatpin with a detachable guard or shield having a central rigid socket for the pointed end ot the pin which is open at one end and closed at. the other by a plug which limits-the inward movement of the pin. A spring latch is rovided which extends from the outside or the socket into the interior thereof, and is adapted to enter a hole in the pin when the latter hasbeen inserted in the socket and its inward movement has been which itv may be opened.
stopped by the plug at one end of the socket. The latch is provided with a handle extending to the outside of the shield In the accompanying drawings,- Figure 1 shows a side elevation of a hat pin with my improvements applied. This figure of the :drawing also indlca-tes how the pin is applied to' a hat. Fig.2 is'a view partly in Sldl.
elevation and partly. in section of a hat pin provided with my improvements. Fig. 3 shows a section on the line 3-3 of Fi 2.
The pin A may be provided wait-an kind of an ornamental head B. The shank of the' pin' is pointed at a and near its pointed end is formed with'a transverse hole or erforation a. The guard C comprises a cylindrical soc'keted central portion 0 and an ornamental casing. (a. The socket is adapted to receive'the pointed portion of the pin and this socketed portion is formed with an opening 01 through which extends a latch finger 0 carried by a s ring 7 which also carries'an arm g exten ing through a hole h in the shield and car ing on its outer end a knob 2'. One end of t e'cylindrical socketed' portion. 0' is open to receive the pointed end by means of WVitnesses when the pointed portion of the pin is inof the pin while the opposite end is closed by a plug D. The arrangement is such that serted into the socket, the hole a will lie inthe vertical plane of theliole (1 through which the latch pin 0 extends and by turning'the pin A on its axis the hole a will be latch pin 6 will enter the hole a and hold the guard securely on; the'pin. When the pin is inserted the pointed end abuts against the plug D which limits its inward move- 'niade,to register with the hole d, and the ment and stops the inward movement of the pm in such manner as to brmg the perforation a in linewith the latch e. The pin is clreular in cross-section and can beturned around its axis when in the socket and when turned to the proper extent the latch e will automatically enter the hole a and the pin can not be withdrawn or the shield removed until the knob a is pressed inward to release the latch.
This device is very simple. It may be made quite ornamental. A pin may be quickly applied to a hat and as quickly removed therefrom, but it is not. apt tobe acci-- dentally detached- \Vhile my improvements are especially intended for use in connection witli hat. pins, it is obvious that they may be applied to pins of other kinds. I claim as my 1nvention:-
A hat pin, circular in cross-section at its pointed end and provided with a perforation in-its pointed portion, 111 comblnation with a guard comprising a rigid, central, socketedv portion opelr at one end and closed at the other end; a guard surroundinglhe socketed )OI-tlOll a s rin -latclrcarried b the sockl n y eted portion and extending into it and which is adapted to enter the perforation in the. pin when the latter is inserted in the socket and abuts against the closedend thereof. 1
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto subscribed myname.
