Description

L17. MENSGH. COMPOSITION RAILWAY TIE AND RAIL CLAMP. v
APPLICATION FILED OUT. 20, 1-908.

LEE 0. MENSCH, OF MASON CITY, IOWA.
COMPOSITION RAILWAY-TU AND RAIL-CLAMP.
$pecification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jul 18, ions.
Application filed' October 20, was. SerialNo. 369,269.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, LEE 0. Manson, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mason Com osition- Railway-Tie and Rail-Clamp,
Cit in the county of Cerro Gordo and State of owa', have invented a new and useful of W ich the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to form in a suitable mold a composition railway tie and permanently combining metal railway chairs for fastenin track rails thereon by detachable metal amps and keys.
My invention consists in a skeleton metal frame composed of rods and rail chairs imbedded in concrete ties and metal clamps and keys as hereinafter set forth, pointed out in my claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which: -Figure l is a side View and 2 a transverse sectional View of one of my metal railway chairs. Fig. 3 shows two chairs combined with two rods as required to produce a skeleton metal frame ada ted to he embedded in concrete to pro uce a complete railway tie. Fig. 4 shows one end portion of a tie in section and a section of a track rail fixed thereon by means of a clamp and key as'requircd for practical use. It also shows a plurality of rods embedded in the concrete to reinforce the concrete tie. Fi 5 is a transverse section of a tie and clrair and apertures in the concrete to admit the passage of a key into the chair as required for engaging a clamp in the'chair for binding a track rail on the chair.
The numeral 10 designates the bod portion of one of my metal chairs. t has flanges 12 at its sides to aid in securely retaining it embedded in concrete as shown in Fig. 5. Metal rods 13 extend into the sockets in the flanges 12 and a metal-rod 14 extends through transverse apertures '15 in the lower ends of the chairs.
Metal clamps 16 of V-shape are placed in the open tops of the chairs, as shown in Fig. 4, as required for engaging the flanges of a track rail and a metal key, .17, is passed through apertures 18 in the concrete to engage the lower end of the ti-shaped clamp, 16, as required to draw downward 'so that the lateral extensions a that rest upon the flanges b of the track rail as shown in Fig. 4
will bind the track rail, the clamp 16, the chair, 10, and the skeleton frame embedded in the concrete tie, all securely together.
Having thus 'set forth the purposes of my invention and the construction, arrangement and combination of all the parts, the ractical operation andutility thereof will e obvious.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
1. A metal railwa chair having fiangesat the top, sockets in t e flanges to admit rods,
an openin in 'its top to admita ll-shaped clamp an a V-shaped clamp-fitted in said opening, to operate as set forth.
In aconcrete railway tie a metal railway chair-haying flanges at its top, sockets in said flanges to admit rods, rods extended into said sockets, an opening in its topto admit a \fishaped clamp, a V-shaped clamp fitted in said opening, apertures in the side of the tie and a metal key to enter said apertures to engage the ti-shaped clamp, arranged and combined to operate in the manner set forth.
3. A composition railway tie comprising a metal skeleton frame composed of two metal railway chairs and two metal rods, V-shaped clamps in the to s of the chairs, the skeleton frame embedde ih concrete as shown, metal V-shaped clamps in the metal chairs and metal keys extended through apertures in the concrete and apertures in the chairs 'to engage and operate the clamps as set forth for the purposes stated.
