To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY SOHLIGHTING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Benicia, in the county of Solano and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Locks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the class of locks and latches and more particularly to an improved form of hasp lock and has for an obect to provide a lock of this character which will be extremely simple in construction and which will include means for unlocking of the hasp by persons not knowing a given combination.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent as the nature of the invention is better disclosed and it will be understood that changes within. the scope of the claims may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings forming a portion of this invention and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure 1 is a front view of the lock showing the application of the same, Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the lock in its released position, Fig. 3 is a horizontal section taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1, Fig. 4c is a rear view of the lock, Fig. 5 is a vertical section taken on the line 55 of Fig. 1.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, there is shown a portion of a door or similar closure A and a portion of a frame B therefor.
My improved lock is shown at 1 and consists preferably of a plate 2 having guideways 3 and 4 at the upper and lower edges thereof, which open outwardly at each end of the plate as clearly shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings. The guideways thus receive the upper and lower edges of a slide plate 5 having at one end a curled finger manipulating portion 6 adapted to overlap one end of the plate 2 when the device is in its locked position. The walls of the guideways 3 and 4 are preferably beveled upwardly, and the edges of the sliding plate are correspondingly beveled, or in other words, said slide plate is substantially of dove tail form in cross section.
A bolt 7 carried by the frame B, is provided with a reduced portion 8 and an en larged portion 9. The portion 9 forms a shoulder 10 which limits the inward movement of the bolt when the latter is placed in position upon the frame. The sliding plate is provided with an elongated. passage 11 through which the portion 9 of the bolt is partly disposed, and the plate 2 is provided with an opening 12 through which the re maining end of the portion 9 of the bolt is disposed. The opening 12 is preferably of a size equal in diameter to that of the portion 9. Upon the under side, at the end in which the passage 11 is formed the plate is beveled or reduced as indictaed at 13, and is spaced from the outer face of the frame B and by constructing the plate in this manner it will be seen that a portion thereof serves as a fulcrum so that the other end of the plate may be moved away from the door or closure A as will be readily understood. The door or closure A is provided with. a bolt 1d having shank 15 upon which is formed a laterally projecting head 16 constructed in a manner so that its inner face lies in spaced relation to the outer face of the door or closure. lhe sliding plate is provided with a rectangular slot 17 of a greater diameter than the diainoter of the shank 15, and it will thus be seen that the said sliding plate may be moved in a manner so that a portion of said plate is disposed beneath the head 16. The plate 2 is provided with a rectangular slot 17 for receiving the head 16 will be clearly seen upon reference to Fig. 3 of the drawings. It may be mentioned that the bolt 7 is provided with a headed outer end 18.
The plate 2 has formed therein midway between its ends an opening 19 which receives the inner reduced portion 20 of a rotary ele ment 21 provided with an annular series of numbers or distinguishing marks 22 adacent to its peripl'leral edge and upon its outer face. The plate is provided with an annular series of numbers or distinguishing marks arranged in an annular series to surround. the element 21 for cooperation with the numbers 01' marks as will be hereinafter more fully described. The sliding plate is provided with a circular opening 24 which communicates with a slot 25 disposed longitudinally of the plate as better illustrated in Fig. 4 of the drawings. lhe element 21 carries a locking element 26 provided with an annular edge 27 to frictioitially bind. against the walls of the opening 24. The locking element 26 has formed integral therewith a finger 28 which. is also adapted to friction ally engage at its outer end. the walls of the open ing' 24;. The element 26 is preferably secured to the element 21 by means of a screw or similar fastening means 29.
By reason of the fact that the element 26 which is carried by the element 21 is rotatably mounted, and by assuming a number on the element 21 is brought to aline with a given number in the series 23 it will be seen that the finger 28 is moved in line with the slot 25, whereupon, the sliding plate may be moved to release the portion of said late from beneath the head 16 in order that p ates 2 and 5 can be swung when it is desired to open the door or closure A. When it is desired to change the combination of the lock it may be stated that the screw 29 is manipulated or unfastened suiliciently to allow the element 26 to be revolved so that the finger 28 thereof points to a certain number or mark u on the element 21.
It wi 1 be seen that a simple and. inexpen sive lock is provided which will be extremely efi'ective in view of the fact that it cannot be manipulated by a person not knowing a given combination.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is
1. The combination with a closure having a bolt projecting therefrom, with a pivotally mounted plate adj aoent to the closure, a sliding plate engaged with the pivotally mounted plate, said plates having alining bolt receiving passages formed therein, said sliding plate being adapted for locking engagement with the bolt, a revoluble element carried by the pivotally mounted plate, and means carried by the revoluble element for engaging the sliding plate to hold the same against sliding movement.
2. The combination with the closure and a bolt carried thereby, of a pivotally mounted plate located adjacent to the closure, provided with a bolt receiving passage, a revoluble element carried by the plate, a sliding plate engaged with the pivotally mounted plate and adapted for locking engagement with the bolt, said pivotally mounted plate having distinguishing marks thereon, said revoluble element having distinguishing marks adapted for cooperation with the marks upon the plate, said sliding plate having an opening formed therein and having a slot communicating with the o ening and extending longitudinally of the p ate, a locking element carried by the revoluble element and disposed in the o ening formed in the sliding plate, and a iinger carried by the locking element adapted when the revoluble element is operated to frictionally engage the walls of the opening to prevent movement of the sliding plate, said finger being also adapted when the revoluble element is operated to aline with the slot formed in the sliding plate so that the latter can be moved to disengage the said plate.
