Description

J. S. NIGHOLSON.
WRENCH.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE 22, 1908.
Patented July 6,1909.

UNITED STATES Pn ENT OFFICE.
JOHN S. NICHOLSON, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
WRENCH.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN S. NronoLsoN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to a wrench, and the primary object of my invention is to provide a simple pipe wrench by which pipes of various sizes can be gripped.
Another object of this invention is to provide a strong and durable wrench having a novel gripping jaw for taking a firm hold upon a pipe.
A further object of this invention is to obviate the necessity of using screw threads and a nut as an adjusting medium of the wrench.
A still further object of this invention is to provide a wrench, the leverage of which insures a positive grip upon a pipe.
With the above and. other objects in view which will more readily appear as the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be presently described and then specifically claimed.
In the drawings :Figure 1 is an elevation of the wrench constructed in accordance with my invention, Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view of a wrench partly broken away and partly in section.
In the accompanying drawings, 1 designates a shank having a toothed gripping jaw 2 and an angularly disposed bifurcated end 3.
Pivotally mounted by a screw 4. in the bifurcated end 3 of the shank is a handle 5, and pivotally connected to the shorter arm of said handle by a screw 6 is a gripping jaw 7 having an angularly disposed toothed gripping Surface 8. The upper end of the shorter arm of said handle is formed with a shoulder 6 and the lower bifurcated end of the Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed June 22, 1908.
Patented July 6, 1909.
Serial No. 439,720.
gripping jaw 7 is formed with a shoulder 6 adapted to contact with the shoulder 6 and prevent the gripping jaw 7 from swinging outwardly in the position illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawings. The handle 5 is normally held in parallel alinement with the shank 1 by a flat spring 9 mounted. in the lower end of the shank 1 and pressing against the rear edge of the handle The handle 5 may be made of a sufficient length whereby considerable leverage can be obtained when using the wrench. The jaws 2 and 7 are adapted to firmly grip a pipe, and it is obvious that the wrench may be of any desired size for gripping pipes of large diameters or very small diameters.
Having now described my invention what I claim as new, is
A wrench of the type described, comprising a shank terminating at one end in an integral jaw, projecting at right angles with respect to the shank, said shank having an inclined bifurcated lower end extending below said. jaw, a handle pivoted at a point removed from its upper end in the bifurcated lower end. of the shank, the inner wall of the bifurcated end of said shank forming a straight and. an inclined bearing surface for one edge of the handle, a swinging jaw hav ing a bifurcated. depending extension pivoted upon the upper end of the handle, the inner wall of the bifurcation of said extension forming a vertical and a pair of horizontal bearing surfaces for the end. of the handle and said inner wall of the extension being further cut away to provide a clearance when shifting the handle, one of said horizontal bearing surfaces constituting a stop for limiting the movement of the swinging jaw, and a spring carried by the shank and bearing against the handle.
In testimony whereof I afIiX my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JOHN S. NICHOLSON. lVitnesses:
MAX H. SaoLoviTz, SAMUEL PAYNE.
