Patented July 6, 1909.
Application led November 28, 1908. I Serial No. 464,842.
To all whoml it may concern.'
Be it known that I, GEORGE D. PUsHEE, of Weston, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Tool for Painters, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide an efl'lcient and convenient tool for painters used in removing paint, manipulating putty or in wall scraping or in other similar uses, and my invention consists in providing a handle with a recess and pivoting in the recess a blade with an extension which engages the walls of the recess to hold the blade in position when in use.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a side view of a brush embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is an end View of the same enlarged and partly broken awa and Fig. 3 is an enlarged side view of the brush shown in Fig. 1 but partly broken away with the blade shown in dotted lines swung slightly out from its closed position.
The handle A of the tool is weighted at one end and the weight consists of' the enlarged portion a, the ferrule a', and the bristles a2, the ferrule and bristles being attached to the enlargement of the handle and the whole bein arranged so that the tool will be balance in the hand of the user.
At the end of the handle opposite the wei hted end is a recess or slit a which exten s through the handle from one side to the other.
The blade B is pivoted at b so that it 4may be swung from its closed position in Fig. 2 to its open position in Fig. 1.
N otches d d at either side of the handle are the blade may be swung from its closed pol sition to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3.
Blade B has an extension b2 extending, when the blade is in the closed position, from the pivot b to the end of the handle. This extension is tapered to be thicker at' its end than at the pivot for two purposes. One purpose is to completely fill the slitl at its two portions b3 b3 will be firmly held. Another purpose is to wedge the extension within thc slit when the blade` is in the open position so that the cutting edge will be firmly held while in use.
In usin my tool, for the purposes mentioned or or slmilar urposes, the blade may be swung from the c osed position to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig..3 bypressing the uscrs finger in one of the notches o'r any convenient tool may be used for this purpose. The blade may then be seized and swung into the open position where it will be clamped by reason of the extension being wedged within the slit. When the blade is not in use it can be swung back into the han dle from either side.
What I claim is:
A tool havin@` a handle provided with a terminal slot, a blade pivoted in said slot, one end of said blade being entirely within the slot in either the closed'or extended position of the blade, said end of the blade being thicker than the other end of the blade and coperating with the walls of the slotl to hold the blade in either of its extended positions.
