Description

J. W. WOOLEY.
SASH HOLDER.
APPLICATION FILED 8EPT.29, 190s.

[NVENTOR Atiomeys W1 TNESSES YHE NORRIS PETERS co.. wAsuma'ron. 2 c4 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN W. WOOLEY, OF NORFOLK, VIRGINIA.
SASHHOLDER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN IV. l/VOOLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Norfolk, in the county of Norfolk and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash-Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in combined stops and antirattlers for windows and my object is to provide a wedge-shaped lock, which is adapted to automatically operate to engage and hold the sash frames from lateral movement and a further object is to provide means for clamping the lock in its adjusted position to hold the sash against vertical movement.
Other objects and advantages will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings which are made a part of this application, Figure 1 is a broken detail sectional view taken through one of the sashes, showing my invention in position thereon. Fig. 2 is a like view with a fastener in its other locking position.
Referring to the drawings in which similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, 1 indicates a window frame, which may be of the usual or any preferred construction and 2 indicates the usual or any preferred form of window sash, said sash being entered at its edges in channels 3 in the frame 1, so that said sash may be moved vertically to raise and lower the same.
It frequently occurs that the sash and channels become worn to such an extent as to allow lateral movement of the sash, thereby causing a rattling noise, as well as permitting the sash to separate and admit dust or rain between the meeting faces of the sash and to obviate this result, I provide my improved anti rattler, which consists of a wedgeshaped body 4 having a slot 5" extending centrally of the body and substantially the full length thereof and through this slot is inserted a screw 7 the inner end of which is introduced into the face of the frame 1.
Specification of Letters Patent. I
Application filed September 29, 1908.
Patented June 22, 1909.
Serial No. 455,286.
The slot 5 in the body 4 is in alinement with one edge of the body and at an angle to the opposite ed e thereof, with the effective edge or face of said body presented to the sash for holding the latter against rattling. The lower end of the body is provided with a cam projection (3, which is adapted to be moved into engagement with the sash when the body 43 is moved upwardly until the screw 7 employed for holding the body l, engages the lower end of the slot. The innermost edge of the lower end of the body is concentric with the lower end of the slot, so that when the body is elevated its full height, the upper end of the body may be swung outwardly and as the cam is eccentric to the lower end of the slot, the cam will be moved firmly into engagement with the face of the sash and to provide a more positive engagement between the cam and the sash, thatportion of the cam engaging the sash may be provided with a plurality of teeth or the like 8.
This device may be very cheaply con structed and applied to use in connection with any preferred form of sash and frame and will not only hold the sash against rattling or vertical movement, but will also cause the sash to closely engage the walls of the channels and prevent rain or snow from entering between the frame and sash and will likewise prevent dust from entering the room.
What I claim is:
A device of the character described comprising a slidable member having a straight edge, also a roughened edge at right angles to the aforesaid edge, said slidable member having an inclined longitudinal slot, and a retaining bolt received by said slot. for the adjustment of said slidable member with either of the aforesaid edges in engagement with the object to be held thereby.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN W. WVOOLEY.
