IMPROVEMENT IN LOW-WATER INDICATORS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the eamo.
To all whom tt may concern Be it known that I, FREDERICK S. BARUs, of the city, county, and State of New York,have invented a -new and improved Low-Vater Detector for Steam- Boilers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, refer: ence being had to the accompanyin f drawings, which fbrm part oi' this specification, and in which- `Figure l. represents a plan view of a low-water dctector constructed according to my invention;
Figure 2, a similar view thereof, with the upper cap removed Figure 3 represents a vertical section of the apparatus, illustrating the interior of the' same while the water in the boiler is at the proper stage; and
Figure 4 is a similar view of thev apparatus, illustrating its operation when the water is at low sta-ge.

This apparatus consists of an elevated chamber, kept filled, by the pressure of steam, with water from the boiler, while the water is ata proper level within the latter, and containing a bucket or open-mouthed vessel, in which water is trapped in such a manner, and which is so connected with the valve, providing for the escape ofthe steam, by which the lowness ofthe water is to be detected, that when the Waterhas returned ti'om the Chamber to the boiler, on l that in the boiler sinking below the desired level, the weight of the water in the said bucket will produce the opening ot' the said valve, and cause the lowness of Water to be detected.
Referring to the accompanying drawings- L represents a portion of a steam-boiler. (')n't-he top of this boiler, and securely attached thereto, is a receptacle or chamber, H.
Said cylinder or chamber H communicates with the interior of the boiler L, by means of pipes, D and K, in the manner as shown, and is provided, in its top, with an outlet-pipe, u, which may connectA with an alarm-whistle, F, for sounding the same, or with a pipe, (l, for operating a feed-pump, or with both.
At or near the lower end of the said'outlet-pipe 'u is fitted a rotary valve-plug or cork, N, upon the projecting ends of which are arranged levers, S S, one of them being allowed to tuin loosely the1eon,while the other, n'tting tightly,^causes, by its turning, also the turning ofthe said cock.
Upon thelong ends of the said levers S S'are carried weights, E E, for the purpose of closing the said cock, and keeping it closed until over-balanced by a heavier weight at the opposite ends of the said levers.
At the shorter ends of said levers S S are hinged connecting-rmls fr c'.
To the opposite or lower endsof said connecting-rods r o', is suspended a cylindrically-Ibrmod bucket or openmouthed receptacle, g, as shown in tig. 3,'so that the depression or settling down of said receptacle from any cause will turn the levers S S on their pivots, and tllereby open the cock N, as shown in fig. 4..
The lower end oi' the pipe Dis made to extend downward within the boiler L, to a level with the waterline at which the alarm or signal is designed to be given, while the corresponding end of the pipe K is made to extend some little distance lower down, as shown, so that while the water is at the proper stage, as in iig. 3, it is forced, by the` pressure of steam, up through the pipes D and' K, filling the cylindrical chamber H, and the smaller receptacle or bucket y contained therein.
W'hen the water in the boiler gets below the level ofthe lower ond of the pipe D, the steam enters into said pipe, and forces the water contained in the chamber H back into the boiler, through the tube K, and supplies its place therein. The wat-er contained in the smaller receptacle heilig still retained therein, causes the ovcrbalancing of the weights E E, and the consequent opening ofthe cock N, as shown in iig. 4, whereupon an alarm is sounded by the whistle F, or motion given to the feed-pump, or both, as may be desired.
The inner receptacle or bucket gis or maybe peribrated at its bottom with an opening, j, for the purpose of allowing the gradual discharge of its contents, thereby providing for the ultimate over-balancing 0f the same by the weights .E l-),.and the consequent closing 0f the cock N.
