PAPER-DIRECTING ATTACHMENT FOR TYPE-WRITING MACHINES.

In the use of typewritin machines, and

. more particularly those'having a front strike and visible writing, the paper will often fall forward into a position to obstruct a View of the writing and sometimesit will even drop into the type basket so as to interfere with the proper operation of the machine. This is particularly apt to occur where there is a breeze or draft.

One of the primary objects ofthe present invention 'is toprovide a novel and very simple attachment that can be applied by the operator to any well known type of machine, and will effectively maintain the paper in its rear position, and will not in any manner interfere with the ordinary use of the machine. Y

A further and important object is to provide means for properly directing and holding long sheets, such as record sheets, said means permitting the easy introduction into the machine of short sheets without disturbing the record sheet-already in place.

The preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein i Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of a typewriting machine, showing the attachment in place. In the embodiment illustrated, the maehine,'which may be of any well known type, is provided with the usual platen 8 and printing mechanism 9. In rear of the platen, is located a paper table 10, and to this table, the attachment is applied. The attachment comprises a support .11, in the 'formof a clip that is arranged to embraceand maybe Specification of Letters Patent.

It is provided with a set screw 12 threaded through one side and adapted to clamp the clip in place. Said clip is provided with an upturned terminal 13, to which is pivoted a post 1 1, The pivot is in the form of a set screw 15 passing through the terminal 13, and threaded into the post 14-, said set screw thus constituting'means for securing the 0st against movement on the clip and in di er ent adjusted positions. The upper end of this post. is bifurcated and pivoted in the bifurcation, as shown at 16, is a paper holding and directing arm 17, the arm swinging upwardly and rearwardly longitudinally of the carriage, as will be evident by reference to Fig. 1. In its operative position, it is located over the paper table 10, but is n'iaintained in spaced relation thereto by-a stop lug 18 carried by the post 14 and retained in the path of movement by the arm. Another and oppositely extending lug l9 limits the outward or rear swinging movement of the arm, as will be clear by reference to Fig. 1.

Forordinary work, the arm 17 is s fiicient, and it will be evident that if it is placed over the paper, it will securely hold the same in its rear position upon the table 10, thus preventing the objections noted in the preliminary portion of the specification. \Vhen the paper is first introduced into the machine, the holding and directing arm 17 is located over the rear portion thereof, and as the front end of the paper moves from the the arm. Said arm is furthermore readily swung out of the way so that it will not interfere with the introduction or removal of the paper. Moreover the device can be readily attached to any machine as it re- (piiresmerelv the application of the clip to either end of the paper table, as may be desired and the adjustment of the post 14 to a position which will hold the arm 1T in a position deemed most suitable.

This structure can be readily detached by removing the set screw 21 when long sheets of the character outlined are not used. lVhen however, it is used, the device is preferably applied to the left end of the machine for the reason that if it were placed at the right end and the device were hur riedly thrown back against the bar 17, the thumb screw 15 might become loose. t will. be evident, however, that if the attachment is applied to the left end of the paper table, it will make no difiercnce how hard the device is thrown against the bar 17, as it will only cause the thumb screw to be tightened, thus making it impossible to fall backward. An additional advantage in this structure that the cover may be applied to the typewriting machine without the necessity of removing the attachment therct'rom for the reason that the arm 20 with the parts supported thereon can be swung forwardly so as not to interfere with the cover.

From the foregoing, it is thought that the construction, operation and many advantages of the herein described invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art, without further description, and it will be understood that various changes in the size, shape, proportion and minor details of construe tion, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of. the ad vantages of the invention.
