The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part Of the same To all whom it may concern;

Be it known that I, M. G. HEPTms'rALIL, of Enthe" county of Halifax, and State of North Carolina, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Tongs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification.

The object of this invention is to provide an improved constrnction and arrangement of fire-tongs, that will prevent the legs from having lateral play at the griping-ends, 'as'is common-With tongs as at present constructed, especially when worn at the joint.

Figure 1 represents a side view, partly broken, of my improved tongs, and v Figure 2 represents a detail view of the same.

I increase'the breadth of that prong which terminates in the handle, immediately in rear of the pivotjoint, as shown at a-a,"and in this inward part-I form a recess, b.

I also provide-a rear extension, Clfnpon the short prong, to work in the said recess; and

I close the said projection into the recess by a plate,

d, fitting -snugly against the face of the said projection, oneend of the plate d being secured by a screw,- e, and the other by the pivot boit f.

' This long projection, fitting between the two sides of the said recess, effectually prevents the lateral play of the griping-ends of the prongs, common to tongs,

as now constructed, without the projection and recess,
