CIG-AR GUTTER AND PERFORATOR.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HARRY C. CRAGG, of Vashington, in the District of Columbia,

have invented a certain new and useful lm-v of; Fig. 3 a like view of a different embodiment of my invention.

The object of my invention is to provide in a single device of simple and inexpensive con-v struction, a cigar tip cutter and a perforator, and in respect to the tip cutter to produce a construction which will avoid clogging by the severed tips, and to this end, my invention consists in the device having the features of construction substantially as hereinafter specified and claimed.

I have had more particularly in view the provision of a device which may be applied to an ordinary lead pencil for the convenient carrying of the device in the pocket, as well as the utilization of the pencil as a sort of handle, to facilitate the operation ofthe deh vice, and for the attainment of this purpose I form the body A of my device of metal tub ing, which at one end has an internal diameter to permit it to readily pass over the end of a lead pencil, such end constituting, in effect, a socket a. Friction may be depended upon to secure the device to the pencil, but prefeiably some positive holding means, such as a pin B passing transversely through the socket and the pencil is employed.

Telescopically or slidably mounted upon the body A is a tube C which, in the form of my invention shown in Figs. 1 and 2, has near the upper or outer end thereof in one side, an opening c of a size to permit the insertion of the end of the cigar, Vthe upper end 0f which opening is formed into a knife or cutting edge, and preferably with the cutting edges inclined or oblique, to produce a shear cut. As the knife or cutting edge is on the outer tube, it is readily accessible for sharpening, and in cutting the cigar this position of the knife is an advantage in that danger of breakage of the cigar is obviated. rlhe tube C is yieldingly held in a position with its cutter opening beyond the upper or outer end of Specification of Letters Patent.

the body A by means of a spring D which, in the form of my invention illustrated in Figs. l and 2, is interposed between a partition or d-iaphragm ct/ and a cross pin E. The partition a may form the end of the socket to abut against the end of the lead pencil. The cross-pin E extends diametrically from side to side of the sliding tube C, and the opposite walls of the body A are slotted to permit relative movement of the cross-pin and said body. By locating the knife or cutter opening in the tube C at the upper or outer end of the device, orat the end opposite that Which has the pencil-engaging socket, the severed cigar tips are easily removed from the device by being dropped or passed out of the open outer end of the tube C.

The operation of my device as a tip cutter will be readily understood. The end of the cigar being p assed through' the cutter forming opening in the sliding tube C, the device conveniently held by means of the pencil as a handle, is operated by pressure of the fore-finger upon the open outer end of thel cutter-carrying tube C, which, by such pressure, is moved over the body A, tlie tip end of the cigar being supported on the end 'a of the body as the cutting proceeds. The open end of the cutter carrying tube A, besides providing an admirable means for the clearing of the cutter from the cut-oil1 tips, is of advantage in affording a good bearing for the end of the fore-finger in moving the tube against the pressure of the spring.

To enable my device to be used as a perforator, as well as a tip cutter, l provide, preferably opposite the cutter opening c in the tube C, a larger opening e for the insertion into the tube C of a cigar whose tip is to be perforated, and mount upon the partition or diaphragm c of the body A a pointed pin or needle a which, by the downward or inward movement of the tube C in a manner similar to that for using the tip cutter, causes the inserted cigar end to be perforated.

ln the form of my invention illustrated in Fig. 8, the position of the openings in the sliding tube c is transposed, such openings being placed near the lower or inner end of the tube C, and the spring D is interposed between the top or outer end of the sliding tube C, and to coperate with each of the openings c and c to permit the insertion of the end of the cigar, the body A is provided with openings c3 and a4c which, respectively,

coincide with the openings c and c When the sliding tube C is at its outermost position ready for operation. The perforated pin or needle D, in the case of the construction illustrated in Fig. 3, is attached to the outer end of the sliding tube C, and in the head d5 of the body A an opening a is provided. for the double purpose of accommodating said pin or needle, and to provide for the expulsion and admission of air from the otherwise closed chamber that Would exist between the ends of the body A and the sliding tube C. The openings provided in the body A and the sliding tube C for the insertion of the cigar for perforating it, are made larger than the tip cutting openings, for the two-fold purpose of permitting the requisite degree of insertion of the cigar end for perforating, and also to provide for the ready outlet or passage from the device of the tip ends cut oit by the cutter. Preferably, the outer end oithe sliding tube C is dished or concave, or provided With an opening to give a goed bearing surface for the fore-linger, similar to that which is provided in the case of the construction illustrated in Figs. i and 2 by the complete open end of the sliding tube C.

My device constitutes not only a most eiicient cigar cutter and periorator oi eX- treme simplicity of construction, but it has a form which provides ample surfaces for the application of advertising matter, so that it may be used as an advertising device.

lt is to be understood that, though spe cally adapted for application to a lead pencil, I nevertheless contemplate the use of such features of my invention as are adaptable for devices not intended to be so used, as Within the scope of my invention, when such features are embodied in devices de- Having thus described my invention, What l claim is:

1. A cigar cutter comprising tWo tubular telescopic members, the outer member being provided With a cutting edge formed on the edge oi an opening that is intermediate the ends of the member, the inner member being provided with a tip supporting surface.

2. A cigar cutter, comprising telescopic members, one of Which has a holder-engaging socket, a knife carried by one of said members, a cigar tip supporting surface on the other member, and a perforating device carried by one of said members, a hole being provided in the side of the device for the insertion of a cigar end crosswise of the direction of movement of the perforating device in position to be perforated by said perforating device.

3. The combination of a tubular body having a helder engaging socket, a tubeslidably mounted upon saidv body on the outside thereof, a spring interposed between said parts, a knife formed by the edge of an opening through the side of said sli'dable tube, a perforating pin or needle, and an opening through the side Wall of said slidable tube for the admission of a cigar end crossWise of the direction of movement oi the pin or needle in position to be punctured by said pin or needle.
