To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. STEVEN- soN, citizen of the United States, residing at Tuscola, in the county of Douglas and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and luseful Improvements in Ironing-Boards, of

which the following is a specification.

The present invention relates to an im.- roved ironing board or table formed with olding supporting legs and embodying a novel construction whereby the said folding supports may be rigidly locked in a'distended position so as to form a firm s'upport for the table.

I`he object of the invention is the provision of a simple and inexpensive device of this character which can be folded so as to occupy a comparatively small amount of space when not in use and in which the supporting members can be quickly swung outwardly into an operative position When desired.

For a full understandin of the invention and the merits thereof an also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction and the means for effecting the result, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which:

Figure 1 is an inverted perspective view of an ironing table embodying the invention, the supporting legs being swung downwardly into operative position. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view through the same. Fig. 3 is a similar view through the ironing table when collapsed. Fig. 4 is a bottom plan view of the table when collapsed. Fig. 5 is a detail view of one of the hinged braces.

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the Views of the drawi-ngs by the same reference characters.

Specifically describirrg the present embodlment of the invention the numeral 1 designates the table top which has an elongated formation and in the present instance is designed to serve as an ironing board. A plurality of brackets are Secured to the bottom of the table 1 and these brackets are formed by the transverse bars 2, 3 and' 4 which have the extremities thereof extended downwardly for attachment with the Swingng supports and the brace members there- Pivotally connected to the down-turned ends of the bar 2 which is located adjacent one end of the table top 1 is a pair' of legs 5, the said legs being connected by the diagonal cross bracing 6 so as to provide a rigid structure. These legs 5 are adapted to fold against the table top 1 when the device is not in use or to be swung downwardly to a position slightly beyond the vertical when in operative position. Hinged brace members -7 connect the legs 5 to the downwardly extended extremities of the bar 3 which is'parallel to and spaced from the bar 2. These hinged braces 7 can be folded upwardly when the legs 5 are swung against the table top, but are provided With the usual stops 8 so that when swung downwardly with the two sections of each brace in alinement with each other the braces will operate in the usual manner to prevent accidental collapsing of the table When in use.

The transverse bar 4 is located at an intermediate point in the length of the table top '1 and pivotally connected to the downwardly extended extremities thereof are the legs 9 which are also connected by diagonal cross bracing 10 similar to that between the legs 5. These legs 9 are somewhat longer than the-legs 5, corresponding in length to the distance between the cross bar 4 and the end of the table top, and are inclined when swung downwardly into operative position. It Will thus be apparent that these legs 9 will not project beyond the end of the table top when collapsed and that when in operative position they will extend under the overhanging portion of the table so as to prevent overturning of the device when pressure is applied thereto. The corresponding legs 5 and 9 upon opposite sides of the table top are connected by the link members 11 so as to swing in unison, the said link members: being pivoted to the legs 5 somewhat closer to the upper or. pivot ends thereof than isthe case With regard to the legs 9. It will thus be obvious that While the two pair of legs 5 and 9 are connected so as to Swing simultaneously, nevertheless they Will not be moved throu h the same arc since any lmovement of the egs 5 will produce a smaller movement of the legs 9. The relation existing between the relative movements of the two sets of legs 5 and 9 is s'o adjusted that they Will both reach an operative position at the same time, the legs 5 being swung to a position sli'ghtly beyond the vertical while the legs 9 are inclined and extend under the o'verhanging portion of the table top. When in this position the hinged braces 7 are swung downwardly so that the sections thereof are in alinement With each other and operate to hold the legs rigidly in a distended or operative position. HoWeVer, When it is desired to collapse the device it is merely necessary to break the hinged braces 7 and to fold the legs 5 and 9 inWardly against the body portion, the said legs being so designed as previously mentioned that they do not project beyond the ends of the table top When thus folded.

'Having thus described the invention, What is claimed as new is:

1. In a device of the character described, the combination of a table top, a supporting member hinged to the table top at one end thereof and adapted to be folded against the table top or sWunO' downwardly to a point beyond the vertical When in o erative position, a second supporting mem er hinged to an intermediate ortion of the table top and adapted to be eit er folded against the table top or swung downwardly When in use so as to assume an inclined position and extend under the overhanging portion of the table top, means for looking t e supporting members in an operative osition, and a link having the ends ivotal y connected to the supporting members for causing the same to swng together, the said link being connected to the first mentioned sup orting member nearer the hinged end thereo than is the case With the second mentioned supporting member so that the said supporting members swing through different arcs.

In a device of the character described, the combination of a table top, a sup orting member hinged to one end of the ta le top and adapted to be ether' folded against the table top or swung downwardly to a position beyond the vertical When in use, hinge braces for holding the supporting member in the last mentioned position, a second su porthinged to an intermediate portion of'tlfe table top and adapted to be either folded a ainst the table top or swung downwardly W en in use so as to assume an inclined position and extend under the overhanging portion of the table to and .a link connecting the supporting mem ers for causing the same to move in unison, the two ends of the link being pivotally connected to the supporting members and the link being connected to the first mentioned vsupporting member nearer to the hinged end thereof than is the case'with the second mentioned supporting member.

3. In a-devce of the character described, the combination of a table top, three transverse bars Secured to the table top and having the extremities thereof extended out- Wardly, a pair of supporting legs pivotally connected to the outwardly extended ends of the transverse bars, hinged brace members connecting the supporting legs to the out- Wardly extended extremities of a second transverse bar, a second pair of supporting legs pivotally connected to the outwardly extended extremities of the third transverse bar, and link members connecting the two pairs of leg's.
