Be it known that I, MARK L. BRILLIANT, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented a new and useful Davenport, of which the following is a specification in such full and clear terms as will enable those skilled in the art to construct and use the same.

This invention relates to devices which are used as a couch in the day time and which fold down for use as a bed at night.

One object of my invention is to provide a new article of household furniture, that shall be a sofa, lounge or settee in one arrangement of its component parts, and a sleeping couch or bed in another arrangement thereof.

Another object of my invention is to provide in a device of the character above mentioned, simplified means for changing from one arrangement to the other, and of supporting the component parts in each specified arrangement.

Other objects of the invention will appear as the description proceeds.

I accomplish my objects by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings of which,

Figure 1 is a perspective view of the box, body, or case forming a part of my device, Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the combined seat and bed forming the other part of my device, Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken along the line o2y of Fig. 4, Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the parts of my device assembled, and arranged as a sofa, or set-tee, Fig. 5 is a plan View of the parts of my device assembled and arranged as a sleeping couch or bed, Fig. 6 is a front elevation of the hanger or hinge, and Fig. 7 is a side elevation thereof.

The same reference numerals are applied to the same parts throughout the several views.

In explaining my device I will proceed to analyze the same with reference to the objects which I aim to attain; and thereafter to show how the component parts thereof are combined to produce the desired results.

Fig. 4 shows the assembled parts arranged as a lounge. It consists of two parts, a box, frame, or casing 1 which may be made in any suitable shape, and ornamented in any desired manner, embellished with carved arms and back, built solid, as shown, or

skeletonized as taste constructive skill and expense may suggest, but nevertheless of substantially the construction illustrated; and a combined seat and bed part 2 which is shown in Fig. 4 arranged as a lounge or sofa. The means for supporting part 2 in both the lounge arrangement shown in Fig. 4 and in the bed arrangement, with its two hinged members 3 and 4, shown in Fig. 5, will be detailed below.

Fig. 1 shows a perspective view of the box 1. At the back and bottom of the said box I provide a shelf 5 having at each end a block 6, 7 presenting an inclined plane. To the ends of said box 1 are fixed one of the members 8 of the pendent hinge 9, Fig. 6.

Fig. 2 shows the combination seat and bed part of my device partly open, Fig. 5 show ing the same in its wholly open or. bed arrangement. The ends of member 3 are provided with the remaining portion 10 of pendent hinge 9. Member 3 is provided with a headpiece 11, which, while my device is arranged as a lounge rests in a recess 12 in member 4. Legs 13 and 14, are provided on member 3 to support the outer edge thereof in the bed arrangement, shown in Fig. 5; and these legs rest in an out of the way position at the corners, see Fig. 4, when my device is arranged as a lounge.

My device is assembled by hooking the member 10 of my pendent hinge into the member 8. In the lounge arrangement, the far edge of the part- 3 of the combined seat and bed rests on the shelf 5, and the near edge is suspended by pendent hinges 9. In the bed arrangement the far edge of part 4 rests on the shelf 5, the near edge of part 3 is supported on the floor by the legs 13 and 14, and the middle part of the bed is supported by the pendent hinges 9.

Parts 3 and 4 of the combined bed and seat are joined by means of the common strap hinges 15.

Attention is now directed to Fig. 3, which shows in cross-section the disposition of the parts 3 and 4 when the device is arranged as a lounge. From this view it will be seen that the far edge of part 4 rests on the bottom of the box 1, the near edge thereof being supported by hinges 15, from the part 3, which latter is supported on the shelf 5 and by the pendent hinges 8. It will be noted further that when the parts are closed as shown in this figure that the lounge seat is at the same height as the bed when the same is open as shown in Fig. 5, which is a great y It will be noted that in my device there advantage since in many beds the open po- 1 1s no needof moving the couch away from sition is much lower than the lounge seat changing from one position to another; and

Referring now to Figs. 6 and 7, I provide pendent hinges of substantially the form shown therein. The part 8 comprises a strap suitably attached to the box 1. Said strap has a suitably shaped slot 16 adapted to receive and hold the button 17 attached to the shank 18, said shank being pivoted to a second strap suitably attached to part 3, said shank and said strap together forming member 10 of pendent hinge 9.

The attachment of hinge 9 to part 3 is at the middle line between the extreme edge of part tand the near edge of part 3. Part 4t is made somewhat narrower than part 8, whereby the attachment of said hinge is on part 4 near the line of joinder through strap hinges 15.

Tracing the operation of my device in effecting the changes from one position to the other, and starting from the position shown in Fig. 3', the upper part 3 is rotated on hinges 15 until the surfaces 20, 21 are brought into engagement. This movement is rendered possible by the use of pendent hinge 9, the shank of which allows the point of support to move out of the center of figure of parts 8. The engagement between said surfaces tends to move the far edge of part 4 upwardly along the inclined planes of blocks 6, 7 and pendent hinge 9 allows an outward movement of the combined seat and bed part, at the same time sliding the far edge of part t on the top of shelf 5; whereupon pendent hinge 9 is restored to its normal position and legs 13, 14 rest on the floor.

I11 reversing the operation aforesaid, the combined bed and seat part is moved out wardly from shelf 5, and the far edge thereof allowed to slide down the blocks 6 and 7 by raising the near edge of the part 3. Thereafter part 3 is rotated till it rests on the shelf 5.

Among the advantages which my device possesses are simplicity of manufacture, cheapness and facility of manipulation.
