1 So far as I am aware,-all looms which have.
any filling-detecting mechanism comprising a feeler to feel for the filling are so constructed that the feeling action of tlie feeler takes place during the forward beat'of the lay, and it is usually necessary to make this feeling action occur during a small increment in the movement of the lay. The result 1s that the feeling motion; of the fe'eler is a quick one, which is liable .to injure delicate yarns. To. avoid this objection, I have 111 my co-pending application Ser-ial No. 293,911, Filed Dec. 30,1905,-descr1bed a loom a feelerwhich is adapted tofeel for havin ,the filling during the backward movement of tlielay so that more time may be given to theffeeling movement of the feele'r. The loom illustrated in said application is v a single box loom, and in mypresent' invention I have applied this type of feeler to a drop box loom having shifting shuttleboxes.
In accordance with my invention, I mount on the lay a feeler which moves with the lay, and I provide means for giving'said feeler its feeling ,movement during the backward movement ofthe lay, andujustafter the shuttle-boxes have shifted each shuttle-box is open at its side-to admit the feeler, and

The feeler mechanism may beused either to stop the 100111 when the filling in any shuttle is practically exhausted or it may be used to control a filling-replenishing mecham' ism which will replenish the filling.

The cam 20 is provided with a low portion 210 which is so positioned that it comes under the end of the ever 16 just as the lay is moving backwardly subsequent to the pick which has driven the acting shuttle into oneof the shifting shuttle-boxes. The cam 20 normally holds the parts in the full line position, Fig. 1, that is, with the feeler withdrawn from the shuttle, but whenever the low portion 210 ofthe cam comes underneath the lever 16, the spring 22 operates through the levers above described to give the feeler its feeling movement toward the shuttle. Since this feeling movement of the feeler is caused entirely by the spring 22, it will be observed that it is a yielding motion rather than a positive one. I
The stop motion for the loom or the fillingreplenishing mechanism, whichever is to be controlled by the feeler, is, in this embodiment of my invention, actuated by or set in motion by a hunter 26 carried by the lay and controlled as to its position by the feeler. The head 33 is preferably adj ustably mounted in the controller, and so positioned that the inclined surface thereof will not strike the inclined surface 331 of the shuttle, until the filling is substantially exhausted from the shuttle. With this arrangement of parts, it will be observed that so long as there is any "quantity of filling in the shuttle,
'the' hunter the inclined surface 330 of the head of the controller will not engage the corresponding inclined surface of the shuttle during the feeling movement of the fcclcr, and therefore the controller will normally retain the position shown in Fig. 4, in which position it is engaged by the connector. The means for shifting the connector after it is released, comprises a lever 38 ivotcd to one of the lay swords as at 39, and carrying a pin 42 which occupies a slot ill of the connector, a spring -11 connecting the connector and said lever, and a cam 35 on the ram shaft 21 for oscillating said lever. 'lhis cam 35 is shown as engaging one cnd of a lever 36 pivoted to the floor or to the frame of the loom as at 37 and also having a pivotal connection with the lever 38. Each rotation of the cam shaft will cause the lever 38 to oscillate, but so long as the head of the connector engages the controller 28 such oscillation merely results in stretching the spring 41. As soon as the controller is released from the connector, however, as above dcscribed, said connector is free to move to the right, Fig. 2, and such movement will occur when the lever 38 is turned by the cam 35, thespring 41 serving as the connection between the lever 38 and the connector to cause the latter to move with the lover. The lever 36- is normally held against the cam 35 by means of a spring 390.
The type of fiHing-replenishing mechanism herein il ustratcd is tiat which contains a reserve supply of bobbins adapted to he inscrtcd into a shuttle. These bobbins are thus transferred from the magazine 6 to the shuttle at the proper time by a transfcrrcr 24- to which is pivoted a dagger 25. the hunter 26 is in its operative position, as is the case when the connector is in engagement with the controller, said hunter 25 does not engage the dagger upon the forward movement of the lay, and therefore the filling' replenishing mechanism does not operate. and therefore I do not wish to be limited to the exact. construction shown.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let-;
ters Patent is 1. In a loom a plurality of ShlflZlDQSllllttle-boxes, a feeler, and means to cause the feeler to feel for the-filling in the active shuttle on the backward movement of the lay.
2. In a loom, a plurality of shifting shuttle-boxes, a single feeler means to cause said feeler to feel for the filling in the shuttle about to be picked just prior to the time when said shuttle is icked.
3. In a loom, a plilrality of shifting shuttle boxes, filling replenishing mechanism,
means to cause detection of substantial exhaustion of the filling in the active shuttle subsequent to the shifting of the shuttleboxes, and during the backward movement of-the lay. i
