Description

0. E. SINGLETON. CHRISTMAS TREE HOLDER.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 19, mos.
Patented June 1,1909.
CLIFTON E. SINGLETON, OF NEW YO RK, N. Y.
CHRISTMAS-TREE HOLDER.
Specificationof Letters Patent.
Patented June 1, 1909.
Application filed May 19, 1908. v Serial No. 433,626.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLIFTON E. SINGLETON,
a citizen of the United States and of the.
State of New York, residing in the borough of Brooklyn, city and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Christmas-Tree Holders, of which the following is a specification.
My improvements relate to supports for holding the bottoms of Christmas trees, or similar articles, so as to maintain them in an upright position, and my invention consists in the particulars hereinafter pointed out and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved holder, and Figs. 2, 3 and 4 are similar views of modified forms thereof.
Where the same reference letters are used in different figures, they designate corresponding parts.
The base of the holder is formed of two crossed bars A A, which are secured together,
centrally, by a threaded bolt C provided with a sharp pointed end and carrying a nut c. The upper one of the pieces A has foot blocks a a. under its ends to give the base an even bearing on the floor. 'lo fold the base pieces, the nut 0 may be loosened and the upper piece swung around so as to rest with its ends on top of the lower piece, in which position it may be held by tightening the nut, the bolt (3 being of such a length that,
when the basc pieces are so folded, it will project but little, if any, above the top of the nut c.
Near the ends of the base pieces I fasten staples b b, which are of a suitable form to receive the hooked ends d d of the flat or round metallic leg pieces D D, the upper ends h h of which are either connected with or formed into an adjustable collarband, embodying screw-threaded members to surround and grip the tree trunk. Thus the legs h It may be secured to cross heads e e,
rovided with flanged, pierced ends, bybcing iientaround thesame,as in Fig. 1; orlooped, as at d (1 into loop-ended wire cross heads, as in Fig. 4,- or bent sidcwise and provided with end perforations and intermediate peri'orations m, as in Fig. 2; or extended beyond the loops (1 (1 into threaded ends 0 0 carrying nuts p p, as in Fig. 3. In the latter case one threaded end 1) is passed through the next loop cl so that the united le ends form an adjustable band which can e enlarged or contracted so as to fit various sizes of trees, and which can be adjusted some-.
what from side to side by tightening or loosening the difl'erent nuts, so as to straighten up the supported tree, which is particularly convenient if the sharp end of the screw 0 is not entered at the center of the tree trunk. In the forms shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 4 the leg members are secured together by bolts f f and nuts 9 g, passing through the appropriate holes, as shown, and which permit of adjustments corresponding in effect to those obtained with the form of Fig. 3 as described.
By screwing off the nuts the legs can be separated, and then unhooked from the base staples, and the leg members may then be packed in the space between the folded base pieces, making a compact and neat arrangement for shipping and handling the holders in knock down form.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. A holder of the class mentioned combining centrally-pivoted, crossed base-sec- "tions, and legs attached at their lower ends thereto and having their tops connected to form a circumferentially adjustable collar band.
a 2. A holder of the class mentioned, combining centrally-pivoted, crossed base-sections, a sharp-pointed, screw-threaded bolt and a nut to secure said base-sections together, and legs attached at their lower ends thereto and having their tops connected to form a circumferentially adjustable collar band. 1
3. A holder of the class mentioned, combining crossed base-sections, and metallic legs dctachably attached at their lower ends thereto and an adjustable collar band, embodying scrowthreaded members, with which the tops of said legs are connected.
4. A holder of the class mentioned, combining crossed base-sections and metallic legs detachably attached thereto by hooked ends engaging in staples therein and being provided at their upper ends with portions having openings tl'l8l6l11, and adjustable sccuring means (:06 crating with said openings to form a circurnf band.
5. A holder of the class mentioned, combining crossed base-members a sharp pointed, screw-threaded bolt carrying a nut rentially adjustable collar said base-members and means consisting of to adjustably secure said base-sections tobining a base portion and metallic legs hav 1c gether, legs having their feet separated and ing their bottoms separated and attached to their tops drawn together, means for dethe base and their tops drawn inward and tachably securing the ends of said legs upon connected in a circumferentially adjustable collar band. screw threaded members provided with nuts CLIFTON E. SIN GLETON. for connecting said tops to form an adjust- Witnesses: able collar-band. WILLIAM H. MOHR, 6. A holder of the class mentioned, com- R. W. SAMPSON.
