GHURN'. APPLICATION FILED MAB.. 25, 1907 922,796. Patented May 25, 1909.
2 SHEETS-SHEET 2.
@mi h1 mwa FLORA A. MILLER, OF CAMPBELLSBURG, KENTUCKY.
CHUR/N.
No. 922,796. Specification of Application led March 25,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, FLORA A. MILLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Campbellsburg, in the county of Henry, State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Churns, and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
rllhis invention has relation to churns of the kind that are composed of an upright barrel provided with vertically-arranged rotary dashes or paddles operated by means supported above the barrel.
It is the object of the invention to provide improvements in the construction of the means for operating the churn, as well as the contrivances associated with the said means, all as will hereinafter more fully appear.
rhe nature of the invention is ascertainable from the device portrayed in the annexed drawings, forming a part of this specification, in view of which it will first be described in detail, with respect to its construction and inode of operation and then be pointed out with particularity in the -subjoined claim.
Of the said drawings-Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved churn. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view. F ig. 3 is a plan.
Fig. 4 is a transverse section in the plane e 4, Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a plan of the cover, the operating means for the shaft being removed and the shaft itself being shown in section.

radially to a distance sufficient to escape the outside edges of the dashers as they rotate. 17 designates the cover to the churn which is offset on its margin, as at 18, to iit in and on the top of the churn body and close the same tightly on said line. The upper end of the shaft 14. extends through a hole 19 in the center of the cover and is provided on its gages a bevel gear 21 secured on a horizontal shaft, 22, that has bearings in the uprights 23 secured by feet 24 to the top and margin of the cover. The shaft 22 has a balancewheel 25 secured upon one end which is provided with a laterally extended handle, 26, near its periphery by which it may be turned. rlhe hole 19 through the center of the cover is sufficiently large to l) ave the bevel gear 2O pass through it when the cover is lifted olf, as it may be, when desired. After the shaft has been placed in position the undue enlargement therearound is closed by a closure device, 27, comprising two members hinged together at one end on the top of the cover and adapted at the other end to be brought together and closed around the shaft on top of the lid and there connected or fastened to prevent leakage through between the shaft and the lid.
28 designates a peep hole in the top of the cover closed by glass or the like through which to observe the progress of the churning of the cream.
In the cylindrical side wall of the churn body is suitably mounted a thermometer 29 of the ordinary construction, the same being for the purpose of indicating the temperature Similar numerals of reference designate similar parts or features, as the case may be, l wherever they occur.
ln the said drawings, 10 designates the body of the churn which may be of cylindrical form and provided at its bottom with a draw-off spigot, 11, and on opposite sides of its upper margin with handles 12 by which it may be carried or moved about.
13 designates a depressed step in the bottom of the churn for the reception of the foot of the dasher shaft 14, which has four dashers or paddles 15 extending laterally therefrom on suitable supports at the four quarters radially of the spindle. Baffie-boards 16 are connected with the inner surface of the churn at four quarters and extend inward of the contents of the churn.
30 designates liasps or hooks pivoted on l the edge of the lid and adapted to engage screw-eyes secured in the body of the churn for keeping the lid in place.
That is claimed is In a churn,- a cylindrical body having a closed bottom and an open top, a removable cover interfitting the open top of the body, uprights terminating in bearings arranged at diametrically opposite points upon the cover, a rotatable shaft journaled in said bearings, a beveled gear fixed to the shaft, said cover containing a central opening, a bearing plate secured to the bottom and arranged axially with said opening, a rotatable dasher shaft journaled in said bearing plate and projectupper end with a bevel pinion 20 that ening'through said o ening above' the cover,- a l ried by the cover and normally surrounding 3 pinion Xed to sai dasher shaft and enmesh the dasher shaft to close the opening in the With the gear, a spider fixed to the dasher cover through which it projects.
